What We've Been Up To:
- OFFICE: April has arrived and with it a new directive from Governor DeSantis. The Stay at Home Order will take place at 12:01 AM, Friday, April 3rd. The United Way staff are now working remotely from home, but fully operating. We are highlighting “positive promotions” through social media and encourage positive local news to be tagged with #UNITEDUpbeats. Our first post/TikTok can be seen here!
- Many local grocery retailers have implemented "Senior Shopping Times" to serve the most vulnerable population. See here for more information on local locations and times.
- Were you recently furloughed or laid off and are now looking for employment? Check here for a list of local job opportunities (as of 3/25).
- GIVE: There has never been a time where community support and financial resources have been more critically needed. In preparation of the economic impact the COVID-19 outbreak will ultimately have on our community, United Way of Hernando County reactivated the Disaster Relief Fund. Generous contributions will support partner services directly serving our neighbors in need facing economic distress associated with COVID-19. Please visit and share: www.UnitedWayHernando.org/GIVE
- Due to donor requests, a portion of designated funds will be used to provide meals from local Hernando restaurants to those individuals working on the front lines, i.e. first responders and health care workers.
- COAD: Your United Way is leading the Hernando COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), communicating daily with Emergency Management and the Department of Health, and collecting any & all unmet needs local health & human services may be experiencing or individuals may have at this time. www.UnitedWayHernando.org/COAD
- RESOURCES: Our United Way created a COVID-19 Give Help, Get Help resource page. This helpful link is updated with information every few hours as our team monitors local activity, including Partner Agency statuses. www.UnitedWayHernando.org/COVID19
- BASIC NEEDS: The United Way office has distributed over 100 toiletry bags to Mid Florida Homeless Coalition in support of their outreach efforts, as well as Hernando Pride, for transitioning youth. Non-packaged items such as shampoo, conditioner, bars of soap, mini toothpastes and children’s toothbrushes were distributed through the school’s food & nutrition bus while delivering meals.
- Over 40 packs of adult diapers have been distributed to agencies serving those most vulnerable.
- FOOD: In support of our Partner Programs, United Way continues to connect and refer as opportunities are made available, including food donations from Timber Pines residents to St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry (Spring Hill) and referring Jericho Road Ministry’s Food Barn (Brooksville) for Duke Energy financial aid.
- As transportation and food insecurity continue to be a growing unmet need, United Way assesses each need carefully and coordinates action through drive through and drop off services, when available.
- CARE: United Way reached out to over 150 dementia caregivers providing valuable information from The Department of Elder Affairs. These shared tips help navigate what to do during the COVID-19 outbreak as a caregiver to a loved one with memory loss. See them here.
- VOLUNTEERISM: United Way acknowledges and agrees with the latest “stay at home” order for the state of Florida. At this time, we are actively recruiting VRC Disaster Relief Volunteers (Volunteer Reception Center) in preparation for the need of additional help in the coming weeks. Sign up now in case our community needs you by visiting www.UnitedWayHernando.org/Volunteer.
Please note, that even with United Way of Hernando County being considered an “essential service”, we continue to follow best practices and most definitely are practicing social distancing. (We miss you all!)
