Celebrating the Art of the Garden

"Town & Country Gardens" is the theme for the seventh annual Hidden Gardens Tour taking place Saturday June 25, 2011. The tour benefits Spencertown Academy Arts Center.   

    

This year's tour offers six very special gardens chosen for their artistic and horticultural excellence. Visitors will spend a delightful day exploring country gardens hidden on rural byways and urban gardens nestled behind elegant facades in historic Hudson, NY.  


The self-guided tour takes place rain or shine. Gardens are open from 10am to 4pm.  

Trumpet vineTickets for the tour only are $25; package tickets which include a morning lecture, boxed lunch, and evening cocktail party are also available. Tickets are now available on-line.  

 

 

Tickets for the tour only may be purchased on the day of the event at Spencertown Academy Arts Center or at the Agway store on Route 9H in Claverack.

Margaret Roach 

LECTURE BY MARGARET ROACH

Saturday June 25

Noted author/garden blogger Margaret Roach will share her extensive gardening knowledge in a morning lecture entitled "At Home in the 365-Day Garden."

 

Ms. Roach, former editorial director for Martha Stewart Living, will describe her own gardening journey - highlighting personal experiences leading to the creation of a beautiful, year-round landscape.   

 

Margaret Roach bookThis is a wonderful opportunity to meet the woman behind the highly successful garden blog, awaytogarden.com, where she provides informative posts, photos, links, and whimsical meanderings from her 2.3 acre zone 5B garden in Columbia County.   

 

The lecture concludes with a book signing of her new memoir, "And I Shall Have Some Peace There." 

 

A delicious, light breakfast will be provided by Carlucci Simons Catering.

BOXED LUNCH AT THE WINERY

12:30 - 2:00pm  

 

Tour-goers can enjoy a delicious boxed lunch served on the grounds of the Hudson-Chatham Winery (advance purchase required).   

 

Winery owners Carlo and Dominique DeVito, both publishing professionals, have lovingly restored the winery's grounds and c. 1780 farmhouse and take pleasure in offering hand-crafted wines, cheeses and desserts.  

 

The boxed lunch is prepared by let's eat! a  dedicated group of food lovers who volunteer as the Academy's in-house catering team.

Begin your garden weekend at the always delightful Twilight in the Garden party. Sip a glass of wine or bubbly as you wander through the gardens at the charming Spencertown home of Jerry Croghan and Louis Hedgecock.   

 

Sample the delicious cocktail buffet served up by the talented foodies of let's eat! and listen to singer-songwriter Cathy Grier, a/k/a NYC Subway Girl entertain with her special brand of folked-up blues. Don't forget delicious desserts from the locavores at Local 111.  

   

A live auction of five "Best of Columbia County" prizes will highlight the evening under the masterful direction of auctioneer Rupert Fennell of Stair Galleries.  

 

Bidding is sure to be lively for a dinner for eight prepared in your home by chef David Wurth (formerly of Local 111 and proprietor of the soon-to-open Crossroads Food Shop in Hillsdale) featuring the very best of Columbia County's agricultural bounty.    

 

Wine lovers can bid on an in-store consultation and tasting with uber-oenophile Michael Albin of Hudson Wine Merchants.

 

Perhaps your goal is to have your own hidden garden? The winning bidder will enjoy an on-site consultation with garden designer Peter Bevacqua, whose personal masterpiece is featured on this year's tour.  

 

If your garden dreams run more to heirloom tomatoes and perfect peppers, you'll want to bid on the kitchen garden consultation offered by Sarah Price, private gardening coach and landscape curator at Olana.  

 

And one lucky bidder will win Barbara Willner's charcoal drawing, "Friendly Garden Visitors" featured on the 2011 garden tour poster.

GARDENS: CONSTRUCTED & FOUND

Spencertown Academy Arts Center celebrates the visual arts throughout the year with gallery exhibitions showcasing the work of artists from our region and beyond.

The gallery presents a special exhibition in conjunction with the Hidden Gardens Tour featuring painting, drawing and collage by  Nancy Beal, Susan Benarcik, and Gail Giles.  All three artists draw inspiration from the garden and the beauty of the natural landcape of rural Columbia County.  

 

Ms. Benarcik will create a site-specific installation at the Academy from found and natural materials gathered from local gardens.      

An opening reception with the artists takes place on Saturday June 11 from 4:00-6:00pm. The show continues through July 23, 2011. Gallery hours are Thursday - Sunday from 1:00-5:00pm. Admission is free.
