Prep Session #1 this Saturday for H.S. Model UN

The first of two student prep sessions for the November 19 high school model United Nations is this Saturday, October 29. The second will be on Saturday, November 12. Both are at the Civitas office ( map) and will run from 9:00 - 11:00 AM.

While these session are not mandatory for delegates, they can be very helpful, particularly for those students who want to submit resolutions to the Model UN.

Civitas will have laptops available for students to engage in research or write resolutions. However, if students have their own laptops, it would be preferable for them to bring their own.

For those students who wrap up their prep work in less than two hours, we will have a free and open discussion group about issues ranging from the international to the local. All topics will be of the students' choice.

Now that countries have been selected for the November 19 Model UN, we need students to register as delegates. What you see to above is not the actual registration form but if you click on it, it will take you to where you sign up. You can also do so by clicking here

Because we expect close to 160 students and the room at the Creve Coeur Drury Inn can comfortably sit only eighty, we will have separate sessions in the morning and afternoon. When a delegate registers, he or she must indicate which session he or she will attend. To find the answer to that question, see whether you school is signed up for AM or PM.
.
There are seven schools for the morning session (8:30 - 11:30 AM) which selected 66 countries Twelve schools selecting 73 countries for the afternoon session (1:00-4:00 PM).

Again, we have two upcoming Saturday mornings. Students can sign up for the October 29 one by clicking here and for the November 12 one by clicking here.

Click here to see which schools have which countries.

Students from St. Joseph's Academy and Webster Groves High School engage in pre-election polling
with Civitas this week

This Wednesday morning, students from St. Joseph's Academy will be polling in downtown Clayton. Later in the week they will be entering their data into the Survey Monkey portal for Civitas.

On Friday, students from Webster Groves High will be polling in the Old Orchard neighborhood. They too will then enter their data on the Civitas - Survey Monkey site.

For next week's Civitas e-newsletter, we will have the results to both schools' polling as well as the aggregate for all schools that polled this fall with Civitas.

NY Times Journalist Richard Bernstein coming to St. Louis as part of Pulitzer Global Gateway Program

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting recently celebrated its tenth anniversary and the 2016-17 school year marks the tenth year of visits to St. Louis classrooms by Pulitzer journalists.

The mission of the Pulitzer Center is to cover stories that are "under-reported," mis-reported," or not reported at all.
What started as primarily print media now is multi-media in all facets.

Next week, Richard Bernstein, who has reported for both the New York Times and Time Magazine will be in St. Louis to discuss his extensive coverage of Taiwanese notions of democracy as they relate to China.

The schools that Richard will be visiting from Wednesday, Nov. 2 - Friday, Nov. 4 are Collegiate School of Medicine & Bioscience, Collinsville, John Burroughs, Lindbergh, Nerinx Hall, Parkway Central, Parkway West and St. Louis University High School

St. Louis City Election Board Needs Workers

Bettie Williams, Republican Deputy Director of the St. Louis City Board of Elections, has contacted Civitas to get the word out that workers are needed for the November 8 presidential election. Bettie has graciously hosted visits by Civitas students in the 2014 and 2016 Urban Go-Team program.

Bettie writes:

Paid workers:

We are looking for students or anyone interested in wo
rking here at the Election Board on Election Day.  The pay would be $125.00 and the hours would be 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The task they would be performing is opening the absentee ballot envelopes and running them through the OS [optical scanner] machine.  If need be we could also provide certificates for community service hours.

We need Republicans and Democrats because they work in teams, one from each party.

These workers need to be 18 and registered voters.

The board can also use students who are not yet 18 to work as greeters at different polling places. They will direct voters to the correct precinct lines, making sure that voters are at the correct polling location. The pay for this work will be $100 for a full day (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). This job can be split by two students working 50/50.

If you are interested, you can contact Bettie at [email protected] or call her at (314) 622-4261.

Middle School Model UN Country Draft results are up!

Students at Holman Middle learn about the UN and share information about their countries.
Teachers who were present at last week's Middle School Model UN meeting will be pleased to know that their country selections and general assembly dates are now online. There are still a few schools who are undecided on which nations their students would like to represent, but once those decisions have been made they too will be posted on the Civitas website. To see a complete list of nations and general assembly dates please click here.

With the country draft complete, students can start researching their role as delegates. It is also time to schedule the "Intro to the Model UN" classroom visit. To schedule a visit, please call or email Bobbi at (314) 443-9785 or [email protected]. This week, students at Pattonville Heights Middle and Holman Middle will be visited by Civitas staff. Updates on these (and future visits) along with some research tips will be available next week.
