Rescheduled Open House at Civitas this Thursday for
high school teachers

We had a "weather event," or at least a weather scare last Thursday, so we have rescheduled the Civitas Open House for High School teachers for this Thursday, January 18.

Since Civitas has such a wide variety of programs for students and teachers at the high school level, we find it particularly helpful to have informal time to mix (and gossip!) with the high school teachers in our program. We will also share information on the next Pulitzer journalists coming in February, the details of our February 24th events for students, as well as other programs we're planning for teachers and students. So our rescheduled Open House is this Thursday afternoon, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM.

The Open House is at the Civitas office; 10845 Olive, Suite #155, in Creve Coeur (map). We would appreciate it if interested teachers could sign up by clicking here. This would be a great gathering to bring a colleague interested in learning more about what Civitas offers. Please just let us know if you plan on bringing someone with you so we have plenty of food and materials.
Guest Speaker on Human Trafficking on Saturday, January 20th

Join us for a special event on Saturday, January 20th. From 9:00-11:00 am at the Civitas office we will have Carmen R. Guynn from CATE give a presentation on human trafficking. She will talk about what is going on locally and answer questions from students.
Carmen R. Guynn is a native of St. Louis and has been a volunteer member of the Coalition Against Trafficking and Exploitation - CATE for eight years.  During this time, she participated in many community outreach events, and training awareness throughout the city of St. Louis.  After 14 years in the field of civil engineering, Ms. Guynn walked away and began the work of full time advocacy against human trafficking.  Now heading CATE, she works with community members, service providers and Missouri Attorney General to build resources, best practices, and law implementation to fight this crime.  Her goal is to always be the voice for the voiceless.

CATE is a collaborative effort of 60 plus agencies and individuals who have built a community movement to respond to human trafficking through public advocacy, training, and outreach strategies.  CATE is a program under the Crime Victim Advocacy Center.

This event is free to all high school students but due to limited space we ask that you R.S.V.P.

Thanks to Ed Smith from MISSOURI COALITION for the ENVIRONMENT for great presentation

Thanks so much to Ed Smith, Policy Director of the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, for coming to Civitas last Saturday to discuss current environmental issues in the St. Louis region.

Ed started with the origin for radioactive material in the St. Louis region at the downtown Mallinckrodt Chemical site. He then expanded to the West Lake Landfill and other toxic spots in St. Louis and St. Charles County. Then he broadened the scope to include coal-power plants operated by Ameren UE. Finally, we discussed water management issues in a metropolitan area such as St. Louis.

Thanks to all students who came and whose fine questions and comments broadened the understanding for everyone.

Civitas Alum to Talk about "Ten Good Reasons to be a Young Adult in St. Louis"

Luke Babich is a graduate of University City High School. During those four years, he participated in numerous Civitas events.

Four years later he graduated from Stanford University, came back to St. Louis, and nearly won a seat on the city council of his home town of University City. He has chosen to be part of the energizing movement to renovate the city of St. Louis and the metropolitan area. He is now working for a tech start-up downtown and is involved in real estate development and renovation.

Luke has been a previous presenter (and even "Mr. Mayor") for Civitas events, and on Saturday, January 27, he will share his thoughts on why it is a great time to be a young adult in St. Louis, and what opportunities lie ahead.

You can sign-up for Luke's 9:00 - 11:00 AM presentation at Civitas (map) by clicking here.
