Parnas HaYom

Parnas   HaYom  is a beautiful way to honor a yarzheit, merit a refuah shelemah, or celebrate a simcha. Dedicating the Torah learning of students at Hillel to mark an occasion helps us to imbue both a love of learning and appreciation for the value of Torah scholarship.

Connections & Blessings

ברוך אתה בבאך וברוך אתה בצאתך
Blessed are you in your coming and blessed shall you be in your leaving.
( Devarim 28:6)

The verse in this week's parasha - ברוך אתה בבאך וברוך אתה בצאתך - "Blessed are you in your coming and blessed shall you be in your leaving" ( Devarim 28:6), alludes to the mitzvah of mezuzah, according to some commentaries. A mezuzah affixed to the doorpost identifies a space as holy and sanctified. Talmudic scholars taught that to put a mezuzah on your door meant that you were protected inside your house and when away. The placing of a mezuzah in a home or office protects its inhabitants.  This is one of the reasons why the Holy name of   ש-ד-י - Sha-dai is associated with the mezuzah. Our Sages tell us that this name of Gd is an acrostic for:  ש ומר ד לתות י שראל - "He guards (watches over) the homes of Israel."
Regarding the mezuzah, Rambam adds that it arouses the person who sees it from his slumber and reminds him of the Creator of the world. The mezuzah is a visible reminder that inspires our connection to Gd when we walk into a home or room and when we leave.  If our homes are filled with the Divine, then when we go out into our worlds, that inspiration will remain with us.

Every mitzvah, whether it be Shabbat observance, Torah study or small acts of kindness and responsibility אחריות  for others, creates a bond between humankind and Hashem. Think of all the mitzvot as opportunities and dedicated connectors between you and Gd.

This month of Ellul, as we anticipate Rosh Hashanah, is an auspicious time when we seek to strengthen our connection with Gd and wish for His protection and blessing. This is also why shulchan aruch reminds us that Ellul is an appropriate time to check our mezuzot and ensure they are kosher. When we commit to fortifying our bond with our Creator, He in turn strengthens His commitment to us.

The unique blessing associated with mezuzah is that it is one of the few mitzvot for which the Torah states its reward. In this case, the reward is long life for oneself and one's children: And you shall inscribe them on the doorposts ("mezuzot") of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be prolonged upon the land which the L-rd swore to give to your fathers for as long as the heavens are above the earth (Deuteronomy 11:20-21).

Beyond the   Divine protection afforded us from the mezuzah, may we merit the reward of long lives, genuine connection with Hashem and may He bless us with an abundance of  ברכות  in our homes and in our entire world.

All are invited to a midday Century City shiur with Rabbi Sufrin "Yamim Noraim"

Wednesday, September 27 12-1pm

Leadership is for Everyone

Mr. Jason Ablin, Principal

Beginning this year at Hillel, the Middle School will embark on an ambitious plan to turn our 6th through 8th grade students into a community of leadership. With the enthusiastic response to Student Government elections last year (over 74 students sought positions through election or appointment), our MS students have all signed up for groups, committees or activities that will allow our entire student body to pursue passions and take on responsibility in transforming our school in critical areas. Sign up choices included: The Hillel Gazette, Video Production Lab, Chessed/Welcoming and Wellness, Club Israel, Yearbook, Robotics, and Tefillah Council. By second semester, we will also be eliciting other leadership clubs that the students might want to see created.

The most exciting part of watching this process unfold is the popularity of two of our clubs, the Chessed Committee and Club Israel. Both of these opportunities were overwhelmingly selected by our students. As two of Hillel's core values, Repairing the World and Love of Israel, it is clear that Hillel students want to put these commitments into action on our campus and beyond. Looking forward to an exciting year of student growth and maturation through leadership!

Israel is in My Heart

By Sigal Maman-Harosh, Associate Chair Hebrew Language Elementary School

As you might already know, hashana (this year), both Harkham Hillel and Israel will celebrate 70 years! As the year progresses, we will share with you the learning and chagigot (celebrations) that will take place to cherish this historical moment.

During Ivrit this year, we will learn Israel's avar (past), celebrate the hov'e (present), and prepare and connect to the ateed (future). Our talmidim (students) will begin to build upon their knowledge from last year's Israel Education unit and continue to enhance their chibur (connection) to Medinat Israel.

Our Elementary School Ivrit teachers, Morah Minda, Morah Inbal, Morah Yael, Morah Tamar, and Morah Dorit have been busy creating stimulating and educational lesson plans that focus on Ivrit verbal skills. Our goal is for each student to connect to Israel and each other b'Ivrit (in Hebrew).

Throughout the year, the talmidim will dive into Israel's geography, learn about important people in Israel's history, and explore Israel's tarboot (culture) by reading, singing, creating, writing and especially by engaging in sichot (conversations). I am excited and honored to work with exceptionally passionate educators!

If you have any she'elot (questions) or comments about Ivrit in Elementary School, please don't hesitate to contact me, Sigal, at [email protected].

We'll be Solving Problems!

Dr. Elizabeth K. Glass, Educational Psychologist

This year's theme for the Intellectually Gifted and Advanced Learner program at Hillel revolves around problem solving. We will incorporate the Character Counts pillars of respect (kavod) and caring (ahava) by creating an environment in which students feel safe thinking out of the box while finding possible solutions to interesting problems. Students will know that others will applaud their ideas and each failure will be viewed as one step closer to success.

Our mantra will be:
"You did it! Hooray! It's the perfect first try! This great flop is over. It's time for the next! Life might have its failures, but this is not it. The only true failure can come if you quit."
From Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty

Special thanks to Gail Katz and Mayer Bick for their generous sponsorship of Hillel's participation in the Community Yoetzet Halacha program. We look forward to Ilana Gadish bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to Hillel and the extended LA community!
