Teacher and staff appreciation week is next week! The PTA will be honoring and celebrating our teachers and faculty with a different special treat each day.

All families who participate at any level
will be recognized on the list of sponsors that all staff will receive.
We are aiming for 100% participation!

You can co-sponsor one of our daily activities (starting at $100), or make a contribution of $18, $36, $50 or $72 per child, or per family.

Parnas Hayom

Parnas   HaYom  is a beautiful way to honor a yarzheit, merit a refuah shelemah, or celebrate a simcha. Dedicating the Torah learning of students at Hillel to mark an occasion helps us to imbue both a love of learning and appreciation for the value of Torah scholarship.

Happy Yom Yerushalayim and Mother's Day on Sunday!
Success Requires Effort
By Rabbi Sufrin, Head of School

This week's parashiyot allude to many lessons regarding the inherent value of  effort exerted in order to accomplish a said goal. Whether one's goal is something worldly in nature or relates to that which is more spiritual; the Torah premise about one's intention and effort are the same.

Providing someone an interest free loan is one of the highest forms of tzedakah . A loan, as opposed to a gift, shows the recipient that you have confidence in their ability to work and earn the money to repay that loan, hence preserving their sense of dignity.  This concept is understandable, but why the prohibition against charging interest? Doesn't a person have a right to earn at least the minimal interest that his or her money may have yielded had it been sitting in a bank?

People ascribe greater value to things they've earned.  Grit and hard work help one raise their self-esteem and sense of pride. The Ramba"n explains that earning money from someone through interest represents a form of reward that is achieved through little effort and therefore forbidden. On the other hand, a lender providing another person the opportunity to work and exert the personal effort necessary in order to earn money to repay a loan is in fact giving the borrower a holy gift.

This same positive Torah value attributed to toil and work in earning a reward is seen in the words of אם בחקתי תלכו -- "when you follow my laws" discussing the mitzvah  to learn Torah.  Rashi infers: שתהיו עמלים בתורה -- "that you should exert much energy when learning Torah." Beyond observance of mitzvot, a person needs to immerse oneself with the utmost dedication in the learning process . For Torah learning to be most meaningful, and to see its impact result in lifelong intrinsic values, it must come through personal hard work. Torah teaches us that even spiritual revenue must be earned by investing energy.

A famous Midrash tells us that when Avraham arrived in Canaan he saw people working hard in their fields and he declared: "I wish this is where I receive my portion." Avraham prescribes his place in  the world to one that fosters the value of hard work and glory that said effort brings.  Similarly, G-d wishes that humankind, as His partner in creation, is constantly working and striving to achieve its reward. Work and investment of time, energy and personal resources, open new vistas and opportunities. G-d wants us to better the world, both physically and spiritually, and such advancement comes through great effort and hard work.  May we all embrace the opportunities to encourage our children to work hard and welcome challenge in their lives. It is from their grit and effort that they will reap the greatest Divine rewards.

Kabbalat Siddur
By Ayala Grimberg, Pre-1 Teacher

This Tuesday marked a milestone for the Pre-First yeladim. The children partook in a Kabbalat Siddur play and celebrated receiving their very own siddurim. An important piece of the process was putting the script together. The script was prepared by asking every individual child what ahe or he wished for from Hashem. This allowed each child to really think deeply and express her or his own thoughts and ideas. Not only was this process very meaningful for the students, but it was for the teachers as well.
Through various songs and Hebrew dialogue, the yeladim shared their enthusiasm and excitement. Learning how to read and daven from a siddur is a great spiritual achievement that should be recognized. As teachers, we feel privileged to be part of this high point in the children's lives and are very proud of their success. Having this celebration was very significant and was the culmination of all the hard work our class has been doing since the beginning of the year.
On Tuesday May 8, the Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy Choir performed a great chessed through a meaningful and memorable performance to the Senior Community of Congregation Shaarei Tefila. The seniors were treated to 15 song selections representing the modern history of the Jewish people and our beautiful tefillot. The songs showcased our talented choristers, and the incredibly beautiful singing brought tremendous joy to the seniors of the community.

Fourth Grade Goes for the Gold!

Susan Botana, 4th Grade General Studies Teacher

The fourth grade classes have been studying the Gold Rush of California through an interactive simulation in class. During this simulation, students learn about California in 1849 and earn gold nuggets by creating projects at home as well as answering questions to "jump" gold mining claims! On May 1, they visited Irvine Park Railroad where they panned for gold, rode a train through a gold mining town while learning about the intercontinental railroad, and entered a mine shaft to discover how the miners felt in the depths of the Earth. While on the field trip, they created a persuasive writing iPad project to convince settlers to move west to California!
They are very excited to present what they have learned about the Gold Rush to the school and their parents in the form of songs and a melodrama entitled "Villains in the Gold Field!" Each student has a role in the melodrama production, from characters to props, and they are diligently working to memorize lines, build scenery and create props from found materials. The students' projects will showcase items used by gold miners. The students will create an advertisement showing their item's versatility and convince buyers to purchase their wares!
