Parnas Hayom

Parnas   HaYom  is a beautiful way to honor a yarzheit, merit a refuah shelemah, or celebrate a simcha. Dedicating the Torah learning of students at Hillel to mark an occasion helps us to imbue both a love of learning and appreciation for the value of Torah scholarship.

The Power of Blessing
By Rabbi Sufrin, Head of School

In this week's Parasha we read about the ברכת כהנים -- 'the priestly blessings."  The kohanim were appointed to be the conduit for Hashem's blessings to come to the people.  Why did the kohanim receive this privilege and ability to bless the people?

Aharon the patriarch of all priests was renowned for his genuine love and care for every person.  In the words of Ethics of our Fathers he was אוהב שלום ורודף שלום -- "a lover of peace and a pursuer of peace."  In order to bless someone else a person has to first have a genuine liking to towards the other person. Since Aharon's descendants, the priests, have this ability to see the positive in everyone, they received this privilege to bless others.
...And A Celebration It Was!

Effortless elegance and timeless tradition created an unforgettable evening of celebration amongst Hillel's Trustees at Citizen Beverly Hills on May 16, 2018. The evening featured a fashion illustrator who produced custom art for our guests, as well as a live auction led by Tzvi Ratner-Stauber. Auctioned items included an annual front-of-the-line carpool pass, an annual designated parking spot in the garage, Principal for the Day and reserved seating at Hillel events for the 2018-2019 school year.

It is the support of our Hillel Trustees that empowers us to provide our children with the  educational excellence they deserve. We encourage all of the families, friends and community of Hillel to consider joining our Hillel Trustee Society.
Enrollment is now open for Camp Hillel - Summer 2018!

Seeing the World Through Technology!
Angela Steele, 3rd Grade General Studies Teacher

At Hillel, we pride ourselves on being an Apple Distinguished school. Integrating technology into our curriculum is a huge part of educating our students. In third grade, we use iPads for many projects in both English and Judaic classrooms. We use apps such as iMovie, Book Creator and ChatterPix to create hands-on learning experiences for our students. Most recently, third graders have been learning about the phases of the moon, the sun, the Earth, and the solar system. For this unit of study, we have been using an app called Planets. Using this app, students can hold the iPad up in the air and see where any constellation or planet is in the sky.

On May 16, the third grade took a field trip to the Griffith Observatory to see several exhibits explaining the roles of the sun, the moon, and the Earth within the solar system. The students took their iPads to the Observatory and took pictures of the exhibits, as well as answered questions about each exhibit. The students will take their pictures and responses and create a book of what they saw using Book Creator. The students learned about instruments that help see the sky, sunset and moonset radial lines, and the depths of space. By taking the iPads on this field trip, the students had a truly hands-on learning experience in conjunction with the Observatory exhibits. Having students fully engaged at the museum creates a deeper understanding of the material. Using the iPads in and out of the classroom lets students engage with their learning on a whole new level.
Sixth Grade: The Month of May in Review
By Leeat Avrahami, Middle School Judaic Studies Teacher

6G had an eventful month. May began with the city-wide Lag B'Omer event at Saban Theatre, where the girls swayed arm-over-shoulder in unison to the musical performance of Benny Friedman and 8th Day Band. It was a memorable event and one the larger Jewish community schools shared together in unity. It was a beautiful sight and one that made the students feel very much a part of Am Echad , one undivided nation!

Then, after a long week of the ERB's standardized tests, 6G enjoyed a creative and stress-relieving activity of creating their own school-sponsored slime! Talk about a breath of relief and accomplishment wrapped into one!
The 2nd and 3rd graders present Beit Issie Shapiro a check of the tzedaka they collected from their participation in Cycles-for-Smiles. We are so proud of the students for their dedication to do chessed and help those in need!
