Parnas Hayom

Parnas   HaYom  is a beautiful way to honor a yarzheit, merit a refuah shelemah, or celebrate a simcha. Dedicating the Torah learning of students at Hillel to mark an occasion helps us to imbue both a love of learning and appreciation for the value of Torah scholarship.

Seeing Positive!
By Rabbi Sufrin, Head of School

Immediately following the episode of the spies we are introduced to a new Mitzvah, of נסכים - "libations."  This entails pouring wine on the altar while most sacrifices were being brought in the בית המקדש -"the Holy Temple."  Why was this Mitzvah introduced at this juncture?

The spies entered the land of Israel according to the Torah during the season of בכורי ענבים -"the ripening of the grapes." They entered at this time since Hashem wanted them to see the beauty of the land and its resources. When they saw the grapes ripening together with the other fruits they should have truly recognized the blessings of the land. Instead, they saw the negative and complained that the land was only fitting for giants.

This is the why the Jews were given the Mitzvah of nesachim at this time.  The produce of grapes, used by the spies to slander the land, was now going to be used in future to give thanks to Hashem with every sacrifice brought in the Temple.  Libations are poured on the altar to remind us that instead of seeing the negative in the grapes as did the spies, we see how the this same grape can be used for holy purposes and positive outcomes.
STUCO Elections!
By Rabbi Zach Swigard, Director of Judaic Studies, Middle School

Student Council is an amazing opportunity for our Middle School students to develop their leadership skills, and it provides students a platform to advocate for the student body.  Through a complete electoral system, our students campaign and speak to the student body to rally for their votes and a chance to lead the school. Coach Chumie and I are pleased to announce the winners of this year's elections and are looking forward to the next stage of leadership in our school!

Principal for the Day!
By Paige Taylor, Donor Relations/Events

"That was the best day ever," exclaimed Aiden and Leila Nelson as they jumped in the car after being 'Principal for the Day' on Tuesday! The 'Principal for the Day' was an experience that was auctioned during the Trustee Event this year, and the children were given the opportunity to learn about and observe what goes on during the daily lives of Hillel's administration team.

To begin the day, Aiden and Leila were greeted by our Director of Safety and Security, Rabbi Broner, at the Oakhurst security office to receive their official Principal badges before diving right into a day of back-to-back meetings with our Administrators. First, they attended a "Day in the Life of the Head of School" breakfast meeting with Rabbi Sufrin, and they learned about his daily responsibilities and asked questions that they had prepared for him. Next, they attended sessions that included "Day in the Life of the Controller and Human Resources Director" followed by a "Day in the Life of the ECE Director." The day continued this way as they met with our Principal, Jason Ablin, took a tour of the campus with our Admissions Director, had lunch with Daphna Orenshein, met with our Director of Judaic Studies and Hebrew Language Department, and explored "secret" rooms on the campus with our Maintenance Department. They ended their day by sharing fundraising ideas with our Development Department.

Aiden and Leila's engagement and excitement throughout the day made this experience rewarding for everyone who participated. The administration team looks forward to sharing this experience with more Hillel students in the future!

ע ברית בכל מקום
Hebrew Everywhere
Yael Gelfer, Elementary School Judaic Studies Teacher

This year we focused on conversational Hebrew dialogue. On a daily basis, the students practiced speaking Hebrew through different activities and presentations. Our goal was for the students to speak Hebrew as often as possible in and out of the classroom. One of our main activities was an interview in which the students asked their peers about their families, hobbies, and appearances in Hebrew. The students also learned several recess games in Hebrew, so that they could use Ivrit outside of the classroom in their natural environment.

In our second grade Hebrew program Key of Friendship, the students told us in Hebrew all about their friends and why they love each other. It was a joy to see our students shine in speaking Hebrew and apply it to their daily lives.

In third grade, the students learned about the trip to "Eretz Israel." Each student had to research a different place or city in Israel. Using the iPads, they created an iMovie or a book creator, where they posted pictures with writing and recorded themselves describing the location. Their creativity and love of learning about Israel was clear, especially during Israel's 70 th Independence Day. The students will continue using Hebrew everywhere they go!
Foundational Skills in Kindergarten
Stacy Herman, Kindergarten Teacher

In Kindergarten, students are gaining the foundation of skills for beginning reading and writing in both Hebrew and English. We practice learning our letters using many different mediums. Singing, reading books, sounding out repetitive words in stories, and making rhymes. These are all strategies that help children stretch out words to hear the sounds separately, which helps them begin to understand blending. Students learn each letter in the alphabet by first writing the letter in the air, and learning its corresponding hand symbol in sign language. Students also participate in sensory activities that start with the letter they are studying, such as making volcanoes for the letter "v" and making homemade ice cream for the letter "i." Students use various items - such as pretzels, Play Doh, shaving cream, paint, blocks, crayons, markers, pencils, and popsicle sticks - to form letters.

Students practice weekly in their workbooks and color in the pictures that begin with the letters as part of our Handwriting Without Tears and Cap It programs. The children are starting to sound out a few words based on the phonic knowledge they've gained throughout the year. Focusing on one letter per week has enabled the kindergartners to recognize the letter, write the letter, and know its corresponding sound. One of the fun things we've done in our class this year is incorporate the alphabet in sign language. It's amazing to see that most of the children can recognize their own names and most of their friends names and sign them - without using words or hints! We know that when our Kindergartners enter Pre-1 next year, their foundation will be solid and will help them become future readers and writers!
