We are so lucky here in Western MA to have a bounty of living museums we can explore with our children while learning about our local history.  Places like the Hancock Shaker Village, Historic Deerfield and Old Sturbridge are great family destinations.  My daughter has recently been studying American Colonial history, so when we heard that Historic Deerfield was having a family day last Saturday with a Patriot's Day Revolutionary Muster & Parade, we made a day of it!

In one of the open fields at Historic Deerfield, Nathan Hale Ancient Fife and Drums of Coventry, CT had set up a Colonial-era encampment  and the kids were running around playing games like children did over 200 years ago.  Hoop trundling, jumping rope and playing tag were some of the kids favorite activities while adults stayed warm by the fire, learned about food from the Colonial era and watched the cannon be loaded and fired.

Find out about other games children played during Colonial times here (pdf), and be sure to visit these local treasures.  Museum passes are often available at your local library. Click here to find out what museum passes your town library might have for lending.

At the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield now through May 8th, take the family to their annual spring celelbration, Baby Animals on the Shaker Farm.  There's scores of baby lambs, piglets, calves, goats, ducklings and chicks making all sorts of cute noises in their historic Round Stone Barn... yet another reason to get out and explore Western MA living museums!
