History Museum's New Exhibits on Port, Sequoia Yacht Club

The San Mateo County Historical Association is developing a new exhibit at the historic County Courthouse Museum about the maritime history of San Mateo County that includes highlights of the Port of Redwood City.

The exhibit will be unveiled March 16, 2014. Highlights:

  • It will upgrade the Charles Parsons' Gallery, which for the past 13 years displayed 24 model ships.
  • It will include maritime-themed murals painted by Burlingame artist Fred Sinclair.
  • There will be interactive exhibits that will provide maritime education to the public.
  • It will chronologically display the model ships by category and help tell the story of ship wrecks on the coast, ship building in South San Francisco during World War II, and working ships such as the scow schooners that once sailed SF Bay.
  • There will be a 4-minute video about the history and current activities at the Port of Redwood City.

Parsons, who died 10 years ago at the age of 87, began his model ship building after his retirement from Chevron. He had developed a lifelong interest in sailing and model ship building growing up in Long Island, NY.
