Digital Citizenship Tip for March: Self Image and Identity
In the real world, it's pretty clear who you are. Online, kids can be anyone they choose to be. Students need to learn the benefits and risks of presenting themselves through different personas and the effects on their sense of self, their reputation, and their relationships.

Because so much of the way kids interact in the online world revolves around creating personal profiles and avatars, identity starts to take on a new meaning.
Anonymity can cause kids to have an alter ego online. This can be a safe and positive way for kids to explore their identities, however it can also be a way for kids to dodge personal consequences. When they are anonymous, they can push limits and act in ways they wouldn't in the real world. If there's a large gap between online and offline identity, it can fragment a kid's sense of self and could create a reputation that could come back and haunt them.

Additionally, in today's 24/7 media world, girls and boys are flooded with messages about how they should look and act. The images and stories kids see in the media play a powerful role in framing their sense of what's "acceptable" and what isn't. Check out Common Sense Media's video called Media's Impact on Kids' Body Image: What Parents Need to Know to learn more about this topic.

Tips:

Talk to your kids about anonymity. Just because your kids are disguised doesn't mean they can't be identified.

If your kids' avatars or screen names concern you, talk with them. Ask questions about their choices. And don't be too quick to worry or judge. Their identities can mean something deep, or be the result of a whim.

Identities grounded in hatred, violence, illegal activities, or risky sexual behavior should be avoided entirely. No child needs to be associated with unhealthy or unethical behavior.

Ask your kids to think about who they want to be in their online life. Is the digital identity they're creating currently how they want to be perceived? How about in 5 years? In 20 years?

Be an adult role model online. Social network sites can magnify our desire to feel photogenic and "camera ready." Encourage your family to focus on accomplishments and attitudes, rather than appearances.

NCES Hosts Talent Show

Students of Northwoods Community Elementary School (NCES) recently showcased their many talents in the first ever "NCES Has Talent" talent show. About 25 students participated in 18 unique acts including singing, dancing, gymnastics, jokes, magic, and much more! Nearly every grade level was represented and after nearly a month of practice, the show went off without a hitch. The entire school and many parents attended this hour-long show. The gym was filled with smiles, laughter, and applause after each and every act. Students are already looking forward to next year's talent show.

Rhinelander Teacher Shari Wendland is a Recipient of 2018 Herb Kohl Foundation Award

Northwoods Community Elementary School 4th grade teacher Shari Wendland is being recognized as a Herb Kohl Educational Foundation 2018 Teacher Fellow.

The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship, Fellowship, and Leadership Program has announced recipients of the 2018 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students, teachers, and principals. Awards in the amount of $6,000 are being made to 100 teachers, 16 principals, and their schools, and $10,000 scholarships will be given to 191 graduating high school students.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist and businessman, in 1990. To date the foundation has awarded $14.5 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools. "Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers, and principals and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future," Kohl said.

Letters notifying recipients of the award were mailed by the Herb Kohl Foundation on March 16, 2018. Regional recognition luncheons honoring the recipients will be held in a few weeks. Herb Kohl will attend all luncheons and present awards to recipients. Congratulations to Shari Wendland for receiving this honor!

Rhinelander High School Students Experience Nicolet's Culinary Arts Kitchen

A variety of delicious sandwiches and wraps were carefully constructed when Rhinelander High School students recently visited the Nicolet College Culinary Arts kitchen.

"This is a great experience for them," said Betsey Perkins, Rhinelander High School instructor. "They get to see a professional kitchen, what the college is like, and if they can see themselves here and going into the field as a career."

During the visit the high schoolers worked with Nicolet Culinary students, who switched hats and became the instructors, guiding their younger counterparts through the different aspects of preparing the dishes.
