The Division of Student Affairs is sponsoring the second annual Hofstra P.R.I.D.E. Week, February 27 to March 2, 2012 as we strive to promote our P.R.I.D.E. Principles and encourage our students to graduate with P.R.I.D.E.

  • Diversity and Community
  • Expression and Free Exchange
There will be so many ways for you to get involved and learn about Hofstra University's P.R.I.D.E. Principles, and we want to encourage all of our commuting students to take advantage of these wonderful programs! All programs are listed below, and you can also click here for the full list too! 
 

Student Affairs, Parent Council, and University Relations are honored to present Cory Booker as the P.R.I.D.E. Week keynote speaker. Two-term Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Cory Booker, will be kicking off "Debate 2012: Pride, Politics and Policy" on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 11:15 a.m. There will also be a Q&A session so come prepared with questions!

Also, the Division of Student Affairs is encouraging Hofstra students, faculty, and staff to "Pay Your P.R.I.D.E. Forward" and engage in random (or not so random) acts of kindness throughout the week. Do You Know What Your Hofstra ID Can Do? 

Mack Student Center Atrium

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 

Stop by for a fun photo shoot. Take a picture with a giant Hofstra ID card. Come and ask questions to learn about the importance of your ID. Show how responsible you are, stop by, learn, and receive a prize! This event is presented by the offices of Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services and Hofstra Card Services.

 

Whatever You Do, Do It with Pride

Are you personally and socially responsible? Take part in our Personal and Social Responsibility challenge and come to the Office of Community Standards to receive ethical question lollypops. Stop by to test how responsible you are.

Represent Your Respect Through "a - R - t" 

Mack Student Center Atrium

The Center for University Advisement, Services for Students with Disabilities, Residential Programs, and the Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services office challenge you to express yourself. Draw, write a poem, make a collage, or use arts and crafts to represent what Respect means to you and you may win a pizza party for your residence hall floor or a group of your fellow commuting students. Large poster boards and contest rules will be available in each Residence Hall and the office of Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services (SC 221) from February 20 - 24. The artwork will be displayed in the lounge areas of each residence hall and in the Commuting Students Lounge to be viewed by the public. The winning Residence Halls and Commuter Students will be announced February 28 during common hour in the Student Center Atrium, where their work will be displayed.

 

Street Fight Documentary Screening

Prior to the keynote from Cory Booker tomorrow at 11:15 a.m., come see the Oscar-nominated documentary that chronicles the contentious 2002 mayoral race in Newark, NJ, which pitted Cory Booker against incumbent Sharpe James. Professor Rosanna Perotti will present an introduction to the movie and set the context for the election.

Two-term Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Cory Booker, will be kicking off " Debate 2012: Pride, Politics and Policy" when he speaks to the Hofstra community as part of the second annual 
P.R.I.D.E. Week. His speech, "Changing the World with Your Bare Hands," aims to empower people to take action and be of greater service. There will also be a Q&A session so come prepared with questions!

"What Would You Do?" Putt-Putt Golf 

Common Hour, 11:15 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Student Center Atrium

Show off your putt-putt skills while answering ethical "What Would You Do?" questions! Students who answer the question appropriately and are able to make the shot in 3 or less strokes will win a prize! Sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Activities.

 

P.R.I.D.E. A-La-Carte Leadership Workshop  

Mack Student Center, Plaza Room West

5 p.m.

Come further develop your leadership skills! This Integrity, Leadership, and Ethics workshop will be led by Dr. Kathleen Wallace of the Philosophy Department. This workshop is open to everyone and is a part of the larger P.R.I.D.E. A-La-Carte Leadership Workshop program. Sponsored by OSLA.

 

Movie Screening: "What Does It Mean to be Human?"

The Catholic Life Office and the Newman Club will present a powerful documentary about two brothers who go out in search of answering the question "What Does It Mean to be Human?". You can view the trailer here:

Take part in our Human Experience Screening, ask questions and share your opinion. We will be offering opportunities to donate and/ or take part in serving a good cause. Come and sign up for the Manhattan Street Team or the Midnight Run scheduled for Sunday, March 4. Get involved. Take your pledge to make a difference and express your integrity, ethics, and leadership skills.

"Represent Your State or Country" - Map Activity

Residential Programs will present a large map of the United States and of the world. Place a star sticker on the map to represent where you are from. Come out to be represented and see the geographic diversity of the Hofstra community!

 

"Music of Many Cultures" 

Netherlands Cafeteria 
7 - 9 p.m.

Music shows our diversity and it builds community. Come out and relax with coffee and cookies while listening to a wide variety of music. Residential Programs, in collaboration with the Center for University Advisement, Services for Students with Disabilities, and Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services, will present different music genres such as Latin, jazz, blues, gospel, rap and opera music to show the diversity of our Hofstra community. Learn about the roots and impacts of different genres of music. Get involved, share your thoughts and be an active part in our Hofstra community.

 

P.R.I.D.E. Basketball Shootout 

Fitness Center 
8 - 9 p.m.

The Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports presents the P.R.I.D.E. Shootout. Sports brings people together to build a community. Come out and shoot some hoops from 5 different spots on the court, each designating one of the five P.R.I.D.E. Principles, to remind yourself about what's important to our community. Make a difference, and show us what community is about. Each participant will receive a gift just for playing, and the winner of the P.R.I.D.E. Shootout will be given a Grand Prize!
