Career Readiness Holiday Newsletter
Holiday Greetings from our CTE Advisory Chair, Mike Schwan and Co-Chair, Michelle Wong
Hard to believe the end of our calendar year is already upon us. I would like to take this time to thank everyone involved with our CTE programs for a very productive year. It’s been awesome to hear how much the sub-committees, teachers and staff are doing to make the CTE program shine. You should all be very proud of these accomplishments. We especially want to thank all those that volunteer their time to enhance this program. We know that teachers and staff are going way beyond their normal duties to make this a great journey for our students. On behalf of the CTE Advisory Committee we thank you very much.
On behalf of my wonderful Co-Chair, Michelle Wong and myself,we wish all of you Happy Holidays and New Year’s. May your holiday be safe and joyous. The New Year is upon us and we look forward to seeing all of you at our next Advisory Meeting February 22nd at Edison HS.
Sincerely,

Mike Schwan

CTE Inaugural Event- Ticket to the Future
On November 8th, approximately 5,500 8th grade students visited Valdez Hall to learn about CTE high school opportunities within Fresno Unified. Current CTE high school students and teachers offered hands-on, interactive demonstrations of pathways, programs and courses. This event provided all middle school students with a better understanding of CTE options offered at all high schools. College and Career Readiness plans to host this annual event in an on-going effort to expand awareness of Career Technical Education within the District. Click the video below to view our first Ticket to the Future Event!
Ticket to the Future Highlights
Career Technical Education Facilities Program
Proposition 51 CTE Facilities Program includes $500 million to fund construction or modification of CTE facilities. College and Career Readiness recently applied for funding to support new or modification of our CTE Facilities at our comprehensive high school sites. State Allocation Board approved $125 million in funds for the first round of Career Technical Education Facilities Program applications .
We would like to thank all of our industry and post-secondary partners who provided letters of support on behalf of the submitted applications. The process for Round 2 of Grant applications will begin in January 2018.
Students from Gaston Middle School’s CoderGirlz Club led a learning session with community leaders on how to write computer code. For its third consecutive year, Fresno Unified participated in the Hour of Code involving over 400 million students worldwide who spent an hour coding. Fresno Unified began aggressively promoting computer science career opportunities to female students in 2014 with the first CoderGirlz coding clubs at Kings Canyon Middle School and Phoenix Secondary Academy.
The interest has grown and CoderGirlz Clubs have expanded to Figarden, Forkner, Manchester GATE, McCardle, Muir and Rowell elementary schools; Computech, Fort Miller, Gaston, Scandinavian and Tehipite middle schools; and Edison and Sunnyside high schools .

CTE Advisory Sub-Committees
CTE Spotlight- Roosevelt High School
   Roosevelt Student Spotlight- Hazel Tcha
During her freshmen year, Hazel Tcha learned she was going to become a mother. Instead of using this as an obstacle, Hazel decided to use this as a turning point in her life. She was married in a traditional Hmong wedding, gave birth to her beautiful daughter, and was later accepted into the Health Academy.  Throughout her time in the Health Academy, Hazel successfully juggled her responsibilities as a mother and wife with her role as a Health Academy student.  Hazel has volunteered at Community Regional Medical Regional Center, received dual enrollment Pharmacology credits, and is currently undergoing clinical training at the Golden Living Nursing Home through the CNA program at Duncan Polytechnical High School. Hazel is pursuing a higher education to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. As a nurse practitioner, Hazel hopes to provide a better life for her daughter and for those who need access to quality healthcare within her community.
F resno Unified's Graduate Profile
Fresno Unified and IMAGO joined forces to develop a series of online lessons that are aligned to the Graduate Profile for our students in an on-going commitment to preparing College and Career Ready Graduates.
Pictured are just a few of the CTE Coordinators working hard to provide rigorous and relevant Work-Based Learning experiences for our students. Happy Holidays from College and Career Readiness!
