Leaf collection 2011
UCD partners with community to remove 2,000 bags of leaves during fall cleanup

UCD held the annual fall community cleanup on December 3rd and, thanks to the efforts of dozens of blocks and volunteers, removed literally tons of leaves and debris. Organized efforts such as our community cleanups continue to make University City a pioneer in greening and sustainability efforts. Specifically, UCD works with the city to make sure that the hundreds of bags of leaves that were collected end up being composted, rather than trashed. In addition, UCD distributes hundreds of bags of leaves to local community gardens which compost them on site. To keep even more of that great organic material in our backyard, UCD is also in the early stages of creating a local composting facility right here in the neighborhood. Stay tuned for more information.

And don't forget that there is still time - until Friday, December 16 - to bag up those leaves and put them out for composting. Just keep your leaves free of trash, and put them out with the rest of your trash and recycling on your normal trash collection day. For more details, and the city's press release, click here.

Crime PreventionHoliday Crime Prevention in University City
While the holidays are joyous, the holiday shopping season is a peak time for crimes such as home burglaries and thefts. Here are some valuable tips that can help prevent you from being the victim of a crime during the holidays:

* Put packages, purchases, GPS units, and other valuables in safe locations while out and about.
* Do not leave items visible through car windows, as they invite break-ins.
* Do not go out alone late at night.
* Be on the lookout for suspicious situations and people.
* Do not carry all valuables at the same time. Remove unused credit cards, Social Security cards, and valuables from wallets, purses and cars.
* Keep copies of credit cards at home in case of theft.
* If attacked, do not resist the requests of the attacker. Injury is less likely to occur if the
attacker gets what he/she wants.
* Draw attention to yourself if you are attacked. Screaming attracts notice; keep a whistle handy to blow if necessary.
* If followed in a car, do not return home. Drive to a well-lit place such as a shopping center or the Police Department.
* If followed on foot, turn around and stare at the follower. Looking at the follower in the face allows him/her to be identified and indicates that he/she cannot commit a surprise attack.
* If you are attacked or notice suspicious activity, call 911 immediately to get help.

The tips presented are not only useful during the holidays but at all times of the year and should be used to reduce the risk of having personal items stolen and prevent personal injury. Download a copy of this flier here.
