If the air suddenly became crystal clear when a homeowner turned on their ventilation system, it would be much easier to convince people that mechanical ventilation is necessary, says Paul Raymer, chief investigator at Heyoka Solutions. In this month's article, "Measuring Mechanical Ventilation Airflow," Paul discusses how, as a house gets tighter, the effectiveness of the ventilation system becomes increasingly critical.
There are numerous approaches to residential ventilation, but all of them rely on moving fresh air from the outside of the house to the inside of the house, and assume that the air outside is cleaner than the air inside.
"Effective ventilation is critical because people need air to breathe, and we have all sorts of chemicals in our homes that may diminish indoor air quality (IAQ)," Paul says. The only way to tell how much air your system is moving? Test it. And that's just what Paul did.

Do Savings Come Out in the Wash? by David Korn and Lauren Mattison
|
The Cadmus Group, Incorporated, metered the actual energy use of 115 new laundry systems - clothes washer, water heater, and clothes dryer - in homes across California. They found that users can save a lot of energy simply by taking advantage of features on new washer/dryer systems, such as high spin cycles, which remove more moisture from the clothes, and automated dryer cycles with moisture sensors. Are you getting the most from your systems?

- ACEEE's Energy Scorecard - A sour U.S. economy, tight state budgets, and Congress's failure to adopt a comprehensive energy strategy have not slowed the growing momentum toward increased energy efficiency, according to the recently released fifth edition of the annual ACEEE Scorecard.
- Europe's Self-Sufficient House - The buyers of this home will supposedly never have to pay an electric bill and only a very minor heating bill. Nor, it is claimed, will they ever have to buy fuel for their cars.
