Thank you to our e-newsletter sponsor,

Greetings!

ACI An industry's health is sometimes measured by the enthusiasm of its trade shows, says Alan Meier in this issue's editorial, "Reflections on ACI."

Luckily for the home performance industry, this year's ACI conference offered new tracks, big attendance, and lively conversations about our future partnerships with big names such as Carrier and Dow.

But, asks Alan, what about the multi-billion dollar question? "Will the home performance successfully absorb, and then move beyond, the Recovery Act (ARRA) funding?" Although Home Energy doesn't yet know the answer to this question, we are keeping our ears to the ground, and will be reporting to you.

Read what else ACI offered attendees this year.

Readers Forum: Energy Bill Disclosure
and Modeling by Matt Golden

May_June Cover "There is little dispute that energy bills are a major cost to American homeowners," says Matt Golden in this month's Readers Forum.

"Clearly, the fact that this information is not disclosed at the time of sale is a major missing link in the value chain of residential energy efficiency," he continues. While it's logical to assume that a house that costs less to operate should command a higher resale value than a typical home, we currently lack sound data to validate this assumption.

For EE to become a tradable resource, it is essential that market actors agree on a standard way to measure that resource.

What approaches to energy bill disclosure should we use?

Deep Energy Retrofit X10 by Brennan Less, Jeremy Fisher, and Iain Walker

LBNL Deep Energy Retrofits (DERs) are at the cutting edge of the residential building industry. These ambitious projects aim to take existing homes and transform them into extremely low-energy homes.

The Residential Building Systems group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) recently monitored ten Northern California DERs. They chose retrofitted homes that have the potential to save more than 50% of their site energy and demonstrate successful paths to DER. Six of the homes were remodeled and four underwent less extensive retrofits.
