You may not read about it on the front page of the newspapers, but Japan is undergoing a second electricity crisis, explains Alan Meier in his latest editorial, "Why Japan's Electricity Crisis Matters."
The first crisis took place last spring and summer after the Fukushima earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent meltdown of multiple nuclear power plants. That power crisis mostly affected Tokyo and northern Japan. This second crisis affects all of Japan, and it has implications for the United States (and the world) at many different levels, including energy and electricity conservation.

Green Dreamin' by Lee Chilcote
Jen and David Hovis stumbled upon a grand old Victorian in the heart of Ohio City. The 4,000 ft2 home had been badly fire damaged when a ramshackle boarding house next door burned down. Despite its current rough condition, however, the home's innate charm was evident in the curved, spindled staircase, old pine floors, and welcoming front porch.

The Victorian was on the market for a mere $40,000. Its out-of-town owners, who'd used it as a rental property, didn't want the hassle of making repairs. The question was, could this inefficient behemoth be renovated to produce genuine energy savings? The Hovises weren't sure.
Read on to see how a deep energy retrofit got this home down to a HERS score of 38.
