March 6, 2018      Finger Lakes Connected

I just got back from a whirlwind weekend in Asheville, North Carolina with my college girlfriends. Wow! It always amazes me how no matter the time or space between us, we just all fall right back into it. Connected. I chuckle to myself because we all met in little ole Potsdam, New York. In the days where you just picked a college without visiting. The irony is one of the reasons I picked Clarkson was because they didn't have an essay on the application. Can you believe I wasn't into writing back then? Now I cannot seem to NOT be long winded in expressing my thoughts. I start and it just flows until it is complete. Ahhhh. I'm thankful that things just work out just as they are meant to and I'm able to do what I love for a living and have all these beautiful connections with people all over. And, I'm especially grateful to come home to the family that loves and gets me and my adventurous spirit that makes life full of smiles and laughter. Do what you love, often and much.

State approves new FLCC degree in psychology

The state Education Department has approved a new Finger Lakes Community College associate degree in psychology in response to increasing interest among students in transfer to four-year psychology programs.

Students can begin enrolling in the associate in science (A.S.) degree in psychology starting in fall 2018. The program lays the groundwork for more rigorous math and science courses required for bachelor's degree programs and includes a requirement that students perform original research. Before state approval, the degree was approved by the State University of New York and meets seamless transfer requirements.

The FLCC psychology associate degree prepares students for transfer into a bachelor's program in psychology or a related field, including chemical dependency counseling, human services and social work. With a four-year degree or advanced degree in this field, students qualify for work in a variety of subfields, including marriage and family therapy and school psychology.
To learn more about the degree visit flcc.edu or attend Spring Visit Day on Saturday, April 14.  Get more information about the Visit Day, by clicking here.

March is Workplace Safety Month. This year's focus is on eye safety at the computer. We want to ensure your eyes stay healthy on the job.
Eyestrain can be lessened or even prevented by making changes to the computer workspace and by visiting an eye doctor. Here are a few suggestions on how to make the workspace more comfortable:

*Place your screen 20 to 26 inches away from your eyes and a little bit below eye level.

*Use a document holder placed next to your computer screen. It should be close enough so you don't have to swing your head back and forth or constantly change your eye focus.

*Change your lighting to lower glare and harsh reflections. Glare filters over your computer screen can also help.

*Use an adjustable chair.

*Choose screens that can tilt and swivel. An adjustable keyboard can also be helpful.
Doing these simple things will help you keep your eyes safe. These eye safety tips are brought to you by Canandaigua The Medicine Shoppe.
