Student Achievements

Join us in congratulating WHS Senior, Heather Fryman!  Heather was recently named a Commended Scholar in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Her score ranks in the top 3% of the 1.6 million students who competed!

Over the summer we also had two WHS students that represented their school in extraordinary ways.

Kristina Walt, represented WHS at the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.

Garrett Hickey represented WHS at the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists.

These students have all gone above and beyond the expected and should be very proud of their accomplishments. They exemplify #CanePride.

In the Classroom - Outside!

Thanks to a grant from the Lucas Foundation and Wicals Roofing and Remodeling, the Denver Place outdoor learning lab has a new lab table.

Second grade students from Mrs. Young's and Mrs. Moyer's classes recently enjoyed a day in the outdoor learning lab. They used the lab table for the first time to complete an investigation on gas and chemical reactions. They were very surprised to see that they could blow up a balloon using a bottle, baking soda, and vinegar. These household items form a gas that filled up their bottle and balloon.

What will these young scientists discover next?

National School Bus Safety Week

October 16th through 20th is National School Bus Safety Week.  Did you know ...
  • Our fleet consists of 28 school buses and 2 vans.
  • We cover an average of 2209 miles every school day!
Over the last month our transportation department spent time with our elementary students, teaching them about school bus safety. Students learned about:
  • DPOS - Designated Point of Safety
  • Danger Zone
  • Bus behavior expectations
As a community that shares the road with school buses and students that walk/ride a bike to school, we can all do our part to help keep kids safe.
  • Be alert when driving through neighborhoods near schools and watch for students walking or riding bikes to/from school.
  • Watch for and stop when you see a crossing guard in an intersection or at a school crossing area.
  • Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and a school bus when driving and stopping.  Leaving plenty of distance allows students to get on/off the bus without getting in the Danger Zone.
  • Learn more about DPOS, the Danger Zone, and safety tips for students and parents by visiting our Transportation page on the District website..
  • And please, DO NOT try to rush past a bus when their lights are flashing for a drop-off or pick-up.
For additional information on sharing the road with school buses please visit the  National Safety Council - Tips for Drivers.

WMS Teacher Dances!

At Wilmington City School we are honoring tradition, building community, and educating for tomorrow. At the Murphy Theatre's Dancing with the Stars event on September 23rd we saw those same 3 things happening county-wide!

People who came from all over the area were honoring the tradition of our rich history of theatre and the arts in Clinton County.

Everyone who danced, donated, attended, cheered, volunteered, and voted were building community for a good cause.

By raising funds to keep our historic theatre updated and ensuring that future generations could experience the arts, everyone was a part of educating for tomorrow.

The dancers were from a variety of professions. Among them were a number of WHS Alumni and our own Wilmington Middle School art teacher, Jane Taylor. The dancers raised over $55,000 for the Murphy Theatre!

Thank you to all of the dancers for stepping up to help preserve a treasured piece of Clinton County history. You were all winners the minute you accepted the challenge!  And a special thank you to WMS Art Teacher, Jane Taylor, for stepping out of her comfort zone and showing our students a great example of honoring tradition, building community, and educating for tomorrow.
