On Gold Star Family Day, we come together to honor those who have lost a loved one serving in the U.S. military by lighting a luminary on the last Sunday in September. Mark your calendars for the next Gold Star Family Day, September 24th, 2017.
Since 2007, the Luminary Initiative has taken hold with individuals, groups and organizations lighting luminaries to honor Gold Star Family members around the United States; whether a few luminaries on a front lawn or hundreds in a community event, the impact is the same: the country shares your loss on this day and we want to keep their memories alive.

History of the Luminary Initiative
On Gold Star Family Day, we come together to honor those who have lost a loved one serving in the U.S. military by lighting a luminary on the last Sunday in September.
Throughout America’s history, from the Revolutionary War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, families have seen their loved ones heed the call of duty; and with that duty comes the ultimate burden that these families must bear. Lighting a luminary on Gold Star Family Day lets them know they don’t stand alone.
We are proud to announce that we have aGold Star Luminary Initiative Facebook groupfor those of you who are planning your own Luminary Initiative event. This group will allow Luminary Initiative supporters across the country to connect and share with one another and discuss luminary event ideas.
Plan Your Event
You can choose to participate in the Gold Star Luminary Initiative as an individual, you can invite friends, neighbors, and coworkers to be involved, or you can host an event on a community-wide scale. Church groups, book clubs, and student clubs are great ways to spread the word about your event. Learn more here.
