Available VA Benefit for Servicemembers or Veterans
Are you interested in starting your own business? Would you like to learn how to get started? Or are you a current business owner who wants to learn how to boost your small business operation? As a Servicemember or Veteran you now have an opportunity to use your education benefits to learn how to start or enhance a small business.

VA only pays for programs offered by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) . Individual courses must be specifically approved for VA purposes to use your benefits.
Note that this benefit is not available under the Dependents Educational Assistance program.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW 

The Two-day Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Self- Employment Intensive Training Workshop is offered in collaboration among the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF), the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. 

You will learn if starting a business is right for you, if your business idea is feasible and much more!

Learn how to start and maintain a balanced set of books that will sustain an IRS audit and provide you with a profit/loss statement each month. Get detailed discussion of forms of business organization and ask questions to determine which one is right for you. QuickBooks Advanced (Practical Applications)
Designed to enhance and enrich the knowledge of current QuickBooks users. Topics include working with inventory, creating estimates, using “classes,” job costing, time tracking, and creating budgets. This hands-on interactive course offers the opportunity to present specific questions and scenarios in order to address your individual QuickBooks needs, as well as the opportunity to interact with peers encountering similar situations.

Building a Successful Business Plan
This program is essential both for the start-up business owner and for the entrepreneur who is preparing to expand a successful business. SBDC Business Consultants will discuss strategic planning, marketing, administration, personnel, finance, and accounting.

For many business owners, government organizations as customers can seem formidable and difficult to  understand. Remove the mystery about the manner in which government organizations purchase goods and services from the private sector. Topics to be covered include: how to locate and bid on contracts; reading and understanding solicitation documents; understanding all the steps that will be followed by all parties associated with the procurement process; and preparing responsive proposals.

One of the services offered through the Calvert County Department of Economic Development is no-cost, confidential, one-on-one business counseling through the Small Business Development Center (SBDC). 

THE MARYLAND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER: BUSINESS SUPPORT FOR EVERY STAGE 

. . . The SBDC offers training and counseling services to local businesses at all stages of growth. From the earliest stages of business planning, to preparing for business sale or exit strategy, the SBDC provides a range of resources. . . .
St. Mary's County Maryland Department of Economic Development Business Resources includes:  Small Business Development Center - In response to the changing needs of entrepreneurs in St. Mary’s County, the Small Business Development Center offers no-cost counseling five days a week.
College of Southern Maryland supports SBDC staff, events, and classroom offerings. . . . Designed for all stages of business development, (classes) and themed workshops range from business planning, to how to comply with legal and tax issues. . 
The Maryland Department of Commerce Office of Small Business Resources is committed to  helping entrepreneurs locate the tools they need to sustain, grow and prosper. The office helps business owners navigate a path through a variety of government programs, private organizations, community partnerships and business service providers. Services include: 

Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC)​ Provides advice, counseling and support to entrepreneurs and small to mid-size businesses across the state. . . . provide(s) management, training and technical assistance to Maryland’s small businesses.
SBA’s District Offices are responsible for the delivery of SBA's many programs and services throughout the country. Services available include:
  • Free consulting services through the network of Small Business Development Centers. SBDCs also conduct training events throughout the district - some require a nominal registration fee.
