Hi Hope Ames!
"We won!" - Danny Housholder, January 8, 2018.
What did "we" win, you might ask? The College Football National Championship of course! Okay, "we" didn't win the championship, but at some point in the national championship game on Monday night, I decided that I wanted the Alabama Crimson Tide to win. I've never cheered for 'Bama in my life, but I think I could have sang
and played lead trumpet in the marching band to "Yea Alabama" when Tua Tagovailoa (I don't know how to pronounce his last name either) threw the winning touchdown to DeVonta Smith in overtime.
Laugh at my fair-weather cheering all you want, but I don't think I'm the only one who does this. Teams, players, artists and performers win over our hearts, and we
really want them to succeed. As fans, that's about all we can do. Alabama's head coach, Nick Saban, wasn't going to call me and say, "Hey, we need you!" Sitting on a couch, 1,000 miles from the game in Atlanta, I couldn't impact the outcome no matter how loud I cheered.
"You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for using my name," Jesus says in John 15:16.
As Christians, I hope we know that we're not merely fans of Jesus, because
Jesus has called us into the game. What is he calling you to do?
We take this question seriously at Hope Ames, and that's why we provide opportunities to serve. Welcome people into a church family each Sunday morning as a greeter. Impact and develop the faith of young people by serving in HopeKids or the nursery. If you're not a people person, that's no problem! You can serve behind the scenes on our production team. If these areas interest you, or if you'd like to look at other ways to serve in and through our church, please email me at
. I can't wait to hear from you!
Our number has been called! Let's get in the game, church!
P.S. Join us for worship this Sunday at 10:30 am in the Ames City Auditorium! We'll learn about the first family to put the "fun" in dysfunctional: Adam, Eve and their kids.
