What Is Open Adoption?
In a nutshell, an open adoption is an adoption where there is some level of information sharing between the birth family and the adoptive parents.  This can be of varying degrees.  Some families choose to only share first names and any letters and pictures are exchanged through Hope Cottage.  Some families choose to get together every few weeks and keep in constant contact.  Most families fall somewhere in the middle.  Letters, pictures and e-mails are shared and the families might meet once or twice a year, often at the Hope Cottage Holiday Party in December and the Hope Cottage Founder's Day Picnic in May.  It is important that you remember, as in all relationships, things change.  Contact will ebb and flow as the needs of the families change and this is ok.

Here are articles on open adoption which might offer insight.

The Other Mother:  A birthmom and an adoptive mom delve into the complex and suprising realities of their open adoptions.

Open Arms:  We entered into an open adoption with no idea what to expect.  Fourteen years later, looking back on the tests we've faced, and the everyday joys, I woudn't have chosen any other path.

Open Adoption Works for Us:  From a rocky start we've built a relationship with our children's birth families that has enriched their lives, and ours.
