Literacy remains a core aspect of our services to children and families.  Currently, Hope Street is partnering with City National Bank, Barnes & Noble, and local Rotary Clubs to bring books to families. Please take a minute to view a micro doc video created by interior designer Pivot illustrating the impact of the new Margolis Family Center has on the community.  Also, remember to mark your calendars and make plans to join us for the Psomas Paper Yacht Challenge on June 26, 2014. Reading is the Way Up Donates Books

City National Bank Partners with Barnes & Noble

City National Bank's Reading is the Way Up initiative recently collaborated with Barnes & Noble Booksellers to make a difference in the lives of children at the Hope Street Margolis Family Center. Through generous donations made by customers at Barnes & Noble Booksellers at The Grove, 500 books were

given to the Center.  Books are critical in developing language and literacy for our children and families. We are so grateful for City National Bank and Barnes and Noble Booksellers at The Grove.  If you would like to be a reading mentor, please contact Amy Costello at (213) 742-5869.

Rotary Clubs Support Home Libraries

Los Angeles and Beverly Hills Club Partner for Literacy

On May 2, the Los Angeles Rotary Club presented Vickie Kropenske with a check for $5,000 to support a joint literacy project with the Beverly Hills Rotary Club. Together, the Rotary provided $7,500 to Hope Street Family Center, in order to provide 300 families with books in their homes and to enhance the lending library on-site at the new Hope Street Margolis Family Center.  Books at home will enable parents to read with their children individually and books in the library provide variety for families, as well as support after-school mentoring and tutoring in the after-school Youth Center. We are grateful for our Rotarian sponsors that include: Susan Berk of the Beverly Hills Rotary and Margaret Karren, Marjorie Heller, and Carmen Schaye of the LA5 Rotary Club of Los Angeles.  We are truly pleased to have the support of these elite and prestigious clubs.  Thank you!

Verifi Volunteers!

Corporate Professionals Take Time for Hope Street Kids

For three full days in February, nearly 30 volunteers from the payment management company Verifi served as mentors and role models for student in the Hope Street after-school program. Students interacted with staff from a variety of backgrounds: Human Resources, Information Technology, Sales, and Customer Service. Additionally, we were honored that founder and Chairman of the Board Matthew Katz was able to make time for our children. Thank you Verifi!  To learn more about volunteering, contact Amy Costello.

Hero Poem Speaks to a Client's Courageous Story

Viviana Rosas recently completed her weekly sessions with her therapist Betsy at the California Behavioral Health Clinic and wished to share her journey with others by consenting to have her poem titled "Hero" distributed to our readers.  Take the time to read Viviana's story and see the transformation that has taken place within herself. Thank you Viviana for sharing!

Hero
By Viviana Rosas

We're told to get over it. As if we didn't spend enough time trying to.

We're told it's all in our head

and the sad part is that's where it is, its in our head, the very place no one can see the pain, the one place that doesn't have an injection or a bandage to help it get better, the place where the naked eye is too blind to notice a forced smile or a fake laugh.

We're told things will get better and we spend day in and day out hoping that it does.

We're told that its just a phase and it'll pass but they don't understand how hopelessness tells us otherwise.

We're told to let it go but they don't seem to understand that we are torn between being what they want us to be and our sanity.

We can't let go of what they want us to be because that means disappointing them and disappointing them seems to be far more painful than any bruise or scar that was left behind the night before.

We can't let go of our sanity because that all we've got left.

We're told that we'll find someone to save us. But we don't need to be saved. We don't need a hero because that means depending on someone and depending on someone means running the risk of being disappointed and being let down is much worse when you depend on someone because they piece you together only to tear you down when they leave but We don't need to be fixed.

We need someone to Stand by us while we fix ourselves someone that'll love us even when Our pieces aren't perfectly aligned because we are stronger than we let ourselves believe What we're told isn't necessarily what we need to hear.

What we need to be told is that we are loved and cared for We are our own Heroes, we are strong and courageous and one day we can use our strength to help others that have fallen; not to piece them together but to lend them a hand, to help them to their feet and give them a bit of our strength so that they too can be their own heroes.
