To see how knowledgeable  you are on colorectal cancer let's
take a short quiz. How knowledgeable are you when it comes to the risks of colorectal cancer? Does being a smoker increase your risk of colon cancer? How about if you have more than 2 alcohol drinks a day?

March Is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Get the facts, and then pass them on!

Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer-cancer of the colon or rectum is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Colorectal cancer also is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States.

The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with advancing age. More than 90% of cases occur in people aged 50 or older.

Reducing Your Risk

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. However, many people who are at risk for the disease are not being screened according to national guidelines.

It is estimated that as many as 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 50 years or older were screened routinely. In most cases, colorectal cancer develops from precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps, so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening tests also can find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.

Some studies show that increased physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight may decrease the risk for colorectal cancer. Evidence is less clear about other ways to prevent colorectal cancer.

Currently, there is no consensus on the role of diet in preventing colorectal cancer, but medical experts recommend a diet low in animal fats and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products to reduce the risk of other chronic diseases, such as coronary artery disease and diabetes.

In addition, researchers are examining the role of certain medications and supplements, including aspirin, calcium, vitamin D, and selenium, in preventing colorectal cancer. While these supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, the most effective way to reduce your risk is by having regular colorectal cancer screening tests beginning at age 50.

When Should You Begin to Get Screened?

You should begin screening for colorectal cancer soon after turning 50, then continue getting screened at regular intervals. However, you may need to be tested earlier or more often than other people if:

  • You or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer; or
  • You have inflammatory bowel disease.

If you are aged 50 or older, or think you may be at increased risk for colorectal cancer, speak with your doctor about getting screened.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for colorectal cancer for all people until they reach 75 years old and for some people when they are older than 75. If you are in this age group, ask your doctor if you should be screened.

We are Hope Through Grace, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending colorectal cancer. "A diagnosis of colon cancer is not a death sentence - I'm living proof of that," said Grace L. Butler, Ph.D. our founder of Hope Through Grace. "But preventive education and early detection are key in successful treatment. Our goal is to build awareness in our community that in most cases, colon cancer is preventable. Additionally, for those who are medically under-served and in need of a colonoscopy, we provide the means to make that happen."

Colon cancer is the number one cancer killer of men and women who are non-smokers, however it is also one of the most preventable types of the disease. Through fundraising efforts like the annual walk-a-thon, Hope Through Grace provides education and other resources for  cancer prevention and early detection to the medically underserved, uninsured and underinsured. In addition to providing this service to the community, Hope Through Grace covers the cost of baseline colonoscopy screenings for individuals who cannot afford health insurance. Over half of persons who were screened were found to have abnormalities in their colon but had no idea these conditions existed.  All of them received the medical attention that was recommended by the gastroenterologists.

"Survival rates for colon cancer are much higher when early diagnosis is available," said Olethia Chisolm, M.D., F.A.C.P. at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Hope Through Grace Founding Board Member and daughter of founder, Dr. GraceButler. "These fundraising opportunities help create a viable means for underprivileged people to get screenings which would otherwise be unavailable for them.

"For me," Chisolm added, "participating in the walk is not only a great way to potentially give people a fighting chance at survival, but it is also an exciting tribute to my mother, who won her battle with colon cancer."

Hope Through Grace, Inc. is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization for Colorectal Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Cancer Survivorship.

We would also like to send a HUGE thank you to everyone who has registered for the 6th Annual Walk-a-thon on March 26th. The amount of donations that have come in are absolutely astounding and we are so thankful and blessed to have you as a supporter of our organization.

Hope Through Grace still needs your help. We need willing participants who will help us address the cause "Stamp out colorectal cancer". We need you to continue to spread the word - or if you haven't signed up yet hurry and register today! We are working hard the next couple of weeks to get everything ready and we want to make sure we are prepared!

$25 per person is all it takes register and you will be helping to fund a baseline colonoscopy which costs $1,000 or more per person.  Can we count on you to sponsor one or two teams of ten?  Just think of the fact that your team contributions may prevent someone from battling advanced stages of colorectal cancer.

2011 is going to be a monumental year, we always have a blast, meet new friends and reconnect with old and dear ones. We hope that you will join us again!
