IREC recently hosted a webinar on the effects of rent control policies on apartment buildings with solar, exploring ways local jurisdictions could (and have) sought to overcome challenges while still preserving the important role that rent control plays in keeping rents stable and affordable. While the focus was on California’s virtual net metering (VNM or NEM-V) tariffs and rent control policies, this discussion is applicable to any jurisdiction with rent control and to programs enabling multifamily solar, including states with community solar policies.  LISTEN  to the archived version .

Sometimes we need to blow a horn or two. In this case, there are several blasts in order. Among IREC’s most critical goals is to share what we know. From our work on the ground in multiple state energy regulatory proceedings, our experts identify challenges and solutions to issues surrounding fair and efficient connection to the grid, including the best new ways to plan for increased distributed renewables and transformational technologies like energy storage. At the same time, we work alongside advocates and others to increase access for populations and communities not yet able to benefit from affordable clean energy or energy efficiency improvements – i.e., low income and moderate income families, multi-unit dwellers and renters. In a new endeavor, IREC has just partnered with the Institute for Building and Technology Safety (IBTS) to carry out a solar training and inspection project funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (Mass CEC ). IREC and IBTS will conduct five live solar permitting and inspection training sessions for code officials across Massachusetts – targeting Solarize Mass communities and other Mass CEC project areas. IBTS, a major third-party solar system inspector in the U.S., will provide inspection of selected Solarize MA systems and other PV systems related to Mass CEC programs. More
Recently released, this key takeaways document is a companion to IREC’s comprehensive. Charging Ahead: An Energy Storage Guide for State Policymakers.  The work provides state policymakers and regulators with systematic, foundational information on advanced energy storage as well as more specific guidance on key policymaking.  More
Martha's Vineyard is a beautiful backdrop - for a vacation or for filming an inspection of a PV system. Last month, Joe Sarubbi, IREC technical education, training and workforce development specialist, was onsite with electrical inspector, IAEI educator, and "film star" Jim Rogers. The two were shooting new training footage that will revamp IREC's renowned PV Online Training (PVOT) course. This inspection of a residential microinverter system is one of four videos that represent different system types in several areas of the country. The new PVOT is designed to meet the needs of a diverse audience of both new and experienced code officials, with cutting edge video and more engaging, interactive sessions. Watch for the revamped PVOT in 2018. More
Hosting capacity analysis (HCA), an emerging tool for enhanced grid transparency, is used to determine the amount of distributed energy resources ( DERs) that the distribution system can accommodate at a given time and at a given location. A tool that can help streamline the interconnection of DERs on the grid, HCA also identifies constraints and capabilities of the distribution system to guide investment decisions about where to locate DERs and where grid upgrades may be necessary. Sara Baldwin Auck, IREC's regulatory program director, and Sky Stanfield, IREC attorney through Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger, talked with #gridgeeks Alison Clements about HCA, lessons learned from the California and other state experiences, and why we should all care about (and embrace!) the tool.

Both GEARED network (Grid Engineering for Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment) and non-GEARED graduate and undergraduate students have until November 27th to submit posters for DistribuTECH Conference 2018. To be selected for their research or projects on power systems, smart grid and distributed technology topics, student posters will be on display throughout the conference. This year, DistribuTECH organizers created a special  student website . DistribuTECH 2018 January 23-25, 2018, San Antonio.  Submit your poster.
IREC recently hosted two webinars. The Effects of Rent Control Policies on Apartment Buildings with Solar discusses how rent control can impact multifamily solar deployment (hosted in partnership with the Center for Sustainable Energy with support from US DOE Solar Market Pathways). The second, How Community Solar is Making Impressive Inroads in Illinois and the Midwest, features representatives from Cook County and other municipalities and offers their experience as insight for others working on community solar.  Listen   to the archived versions.
