Dear Parents,
The Parents & Families Program is changing and we want you to be a part of it. We are supporting parents, and we are also supporting students-with-children. We want to do a better job of serving all of you in the ways you need.
In February, our student assistants have been checking in on you to see if you need anything. We are calling and emailing to circle back with customers to see if we can help. Another new thing we are doing is offering more opportunities for engagement. In April, we ask you to consider supporting our third-annual "Shark Tank" style competition called
STRONG
(see more below; sign up
here
)
. We also invite you to join our campus fun run team, the Spitting Llamas (the WELL 5k is Thursday April 19! Register
here
; $23 until prices go up March 16.) In May, we invite you to a baseball game, where our Sac State Hornets take on the Seattle Redhawks Saturday, May 5 at 6 pm. Tickets for adults are $10 and $5 for kids ages 3-17 (buy tickets
here
)
. This is Alumni Weekend and we can't wait to honor parents and invite you in to our community.
A few things we want to remind you about:
Pop Up Pantry
gives fresh produce to students. Remaining dates are Feb 26, Mar 12, 26, Apr 9, 16, 23, and May 14. And
PARC
is looking for students with great math skills to interview for math tutor positions for this fall (click "peer tutor" on
this link
).
For students with children, we are offering one event per semester to help create a sense of community. We hosted a
Welcome Back Mixer
with the
Women's Resource Center
in January. In February, we hosted a social meet up at an indoor playground called
Wacky Tacky
. In March, we'll have a professional development workshop called "Powerful You: The Next Chapter" co-hosted with the
Career Center
and the
DEGREES Project
to help student-parents prepare for a career after college. In April we'll encourage student-parents to participate in our idea competition called
STRONG
, and in May, we'll have a graduation celebration for student-parents. We are making improvements to our mother's rooms on campus, and writing a report about student-parents at Sac State.
We have a lot going on, as you do, too. Please share your students' success stories, or any concerns, by emailing
[email protected]
or calling us at (916) 278-4353. We love to hear from you!
Sincerely,
Haley Myers Dillon

SUMMER SESSION
Summer Session is one way to help students finish college in 4 years. Summer Session offers Sac State students the opportunity to take classes during two 6-week sessions or one 12 week session. These accelerated sessions provide students with the flexibility to continue their education while pursuing other interests over the summer.
Normally impacted classes are available during Summer Sessions to ease bottlenecks and help students fulfill their degree goals. Students can choose from a wide range of courses in every college and get one step closer to graduation!

Support STRONG 2018:
Give expertise or financial support
"STRONG: Hornets Imagine Tomorrow's Solutions" is an academic "idea competition" where students apply what they have learned to solve a real-world problem. We call it Sac State's version of
Shark Tank
.
We are seeking professionals to
volunteer
to judge student presentations, and we are seeking
donations
to help fund three $1,000 awards for the top student competitors. If 30 people give $100, then we can reach our $3,000 goal quickly!
The event will take place Friday, April 13 from 9a-3p on campus. This is an excellent opportunity for you to be involved in an event that builds students' professionalism and confidence.
