'OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL' SUMMIT

Hostos Community College President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez joined a prestigious group of CEOs and other community and business leaders on January 31, 2014, at the White House for an important "Opportunity for All" summit, hosted by President Barack Obama aimed at helping the long-term unemployed.

"I'm honored to be part of this White House summit on helping the long-term unemployed. Hostos is located in a community with close to a 14 percent unemployment rate, which is double the national average," said Matos Rodríguez. "We are committed to continuing to partner with our local and regional businesses to help them identify and hire well-trained workers.  We commend President Obama, Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and Bronx Borough President Díaz, Jr. for their efforts, as we pledge to continue our efforts to expand our workforce training partnerships and programs."

HOSTOS LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE SCHOLARSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Nearly every Hostos Community College student will need financial assistance to pay for their college education. That is why the Hostos Institutional Advancement Division has launched a pilot of its first-ever Online Scholarship Management System to assist all students-from enrolling freshmen, to returning students-who are looking for additional financial support.

Hostos and the Hostos Community College Foundation offer numerous scholarships to full- and part-time students. These scholarships are made possible by generous donors who believe in our mission. We know that not every student, nor every scholarship, is the same and matching both together is extremely important, thus we developed this easy to use site. The new Online Scholarship Management System at Hostos is free, comprehensive and easy to use.

He is also remembered for having championed the ideals of political equality and democracy in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, and for his work as an educator in Chile, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.

HOSTOS HOME TO
URBAN FOOD DISCUSSION

On January 24, Hostos Community College's Center for Bronx Non-Profits sponsored a town hall meeting to discuss the importance of healthy eating and having access to fresh foods. "The Challenges of Urban Food Systems" was the first in the Center's Public Conversation Series of quarterly events that will focus on emerging paradigms in public policy and non-profit practice.

The initial meeting drew over 120 attendees who heard a panel of experts speak about systems that are working, those that are missing the mark, and initiatives that show promise for the future. Topics addressed by the panel included urban gardens and green markets, making nutritious food more available in urban areas, social accountability, making healthful food production its own economic engine, and the role of government.
