HOSTOS CENTER FOR THE ARTS & CULTURE BENEFIT CONCERT POSTPONED;

NEW DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

Over the past week, New York City and its neighbors have been rebuilding after an unprecedented storm devastated our region. Hurricane Sandy took lives and caused damage that will be felt for years to come. The Hostos Community College family sends its heartfelt condolences to all who are still suffering.

With so many people still not out of harm's way, Hostos Community College Foundation, the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, along with the College's administration and the artists, have decided to postpone the Fall Concert featuring Cheo Feliciano and Danny Rivera that was scheduled for November 16th.

This decision was not taken lightly and was reached unanimously after much deliberation with everyone involved. Hostos Community College realizes that many people are still recovering from the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy, and holding a celebratory event while the rebuilding continues would not be in the public's best interest. Hostos Community College wishes rather to focus its energy on helping those in need and hold this celebratory event at a more appropriate time.

As soon as a new date for the concert is determined, we will let our community know.  Those individuals who purchased tickets for the postponed event will be contacted by the Main Theater Box Office in order to issue a refund.  In the meantime, if you prefer to contact the Theater Box Office, please feel free to do so by calling 718-518-4455.

Because this concert was intended to benefit the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture and also serve as a celebration to recognize the 40 years of service of its director, Wallace Edgecombe, Hostos Community College will continue to sell special seat inscription plates to raise funds for this purpose.  Plates for orchestra seats are $1,000; plates for mezzanine seats are $500; and plates for balcony seats are $250.  All donations are tax-deductible.

To purchase seat inscription plates or discuss other donations, please call Dianne Vargas, Division of Institutional Advancement, at (718) 518-4152.  She may also be reached by email at dvargas@hostos.cuny.edu.

HOSTOS ENGINEERING STUDENT TRAVELING TO CALIFORNIA AS PART OF
SCIENCE GRANT SECURED BY
PROFESSOR NELSON NUÑEZ-RODRÍGUEZ

Ángel Cuevas enrolled at Hostos Community College because he wanted to go places. Thanks to his hard work - plus a grant secured by his professor - he will soon be headed somewhere he never thought he would go.

Early in October, Ángel learned that he will be traveling to San Francisco, California, with Hostos Professor Nelson Nuñez-Rodríguez to attend the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), which will be held there from December 15th to December 19th. Nuñez Rodríguez, a faculty member in the Natural Sciences Department at Hostos, secured a $1,425 award from the Minorities Affairs Committee of the ASCB to cover the cost of the trip.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Name: Oumar Mbaye

Sport: Soccer (freshman forward/midfielder)

Some people say it's a small world; and Hostos Community College freshman Oumar Mbaye, who came all the way from Nouakchott, Mauritania, in West Africa, and is making a name for himself on the soccer fields of New York City, would probably agree.

Not only does Oumar play on the Caimans team, he dominates. After a tough loss to Suffolk County CC in the regional playoffs on October 24, he had scored a team-leading 12 goals plus 5 assists in 14 games, helping the Caimans to an 8-4-2 record. Oumar, who has been playing soccer since he was about 10, said the help and guidance provided by his teammates and coaches-including Assistant Coach Alpha Barry, who is also from Africa - made him feel more comfortable and confident.
