The Next Note Music Conference
By Rees Shad
As a professor of audio production, I have for years been confronted by the disconnect involved when I meet students who wish to become audio engineers and record producers while expressing disdain for the purchasing of music. The irony of wanting to be involved in 'the business' while not finding it necessary to invest in it struck me as a uniquely 21st Century quandary.
But as I have researched the history of my medium in order to teach courses in the topic, I began to see that the future has always seemed bleak in the recording arts - from the earliest Edison phonographs threatening to put professional musicians out of work, to the danger of radio being the end of purchased music, on to the sharing of digital recordings making the music industry feel like a house of cards. Yet the music business has always had its visionaries who have repurposed the form and re-established enterprise.

Alumni Profile - Van Tran, Class of 2001
The College is proud to count Van Tran, class of 2001, as a contributing member to the Hostos legacy. Since his time here as a student, Mr. Tran has gone on to become an academic leader, researching, writing and teaching immigration issues and public policy at some of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country.
Here Mr. Van shares his reflections about life in New York City and his professional trajectory - as well as offering helpful words of wisdom to today's students.
How did Hostos influence your life in New York City when you first arrived?
Hostos provided a wonderful intellectual home and an excellent foundation for my education. When I first arrived in New York City in 1998, I started working at Wankel's Hardware on the Upper East Side of Manhattan full-time. At the time, I wanted to attend a community college that was conveniently located and affordable, so that I could attend courses in the evening after work.
