Hostos Prepares For "Life After Wally":
Edgecombe is set to retire as Director of the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture after nearly 40 years with College

Wallace Edgecombe likes to produce art "from the bottom to the top," says Edgecombe's wife Nydia, who is the Alumni Relations Director at Hostos Community College. The couple met at a Christmas party given by the College's Radiology Department in 1977 and they have been together ever since.
For nearly 40 years, "Wally" has done just that, produce art and culture, as the Director of the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture (HCAC). Now 63, Edgecombe is retiring and will be a tough act to follow. His Hostos story started when Edgecombe saw the South Bronx as better than just burning and more than Fort Apache. He saw it as culturally fertile ground.

2012 Valedictorian Herminio Torres
Herminio Torres was the Valedictorian for the 2012 graduating class of Hostos Community College.
Torres, 47, returned to college a couple of years ago after working in both the fields of investment banking and construction. He said a knee injury forced him out of construction work and the Hostos Community College name helped bring him back into the classroom.
"My father actually came from the same town (Mayagüez, Puerto Rico) as the man the college was named after, Eugenio María de Hostos," Torres said. "That kind of initially drew me here."
Always having a love for the sciences, Torres thrived at Hostos and also became involved in Student Government, the Honors Program, and the Hostos Leadership Academy.
Torres graduated in June with a 4.0 GPA in Liberal Arts and Sciences and will transfer to Columbia University in the fall where he will study biochemistry.
Speaking just before Friday's 41st Commencement from his Student Government office, the former Marine said he had to "retrain himself" when he decided to return to college after a nearly 30-year layoff, but it was worth it.
"Hostos was great. It totally changed my perspective on life. I came in here hoping I could do it, but now I know if I put in the work, everything will go exactly as I planned."

2012 Salutatorian Christine Roth
The Hostos Community College Salutatorian for 2012 was Christine Roth. Roth is 52 years old, lives in Harlem and is a married mother of three children. Roth is a unique example of the diversity celebrated by Hostos as she graduated from Lycée Emile Duclaux High School in Aurillac, France just over 30 years ago.
Roth enrolled at Hostos two years ago after deciding she wanted to try her hand at teaching after being an accountant for several years.
Roth studied Liberal Arts at Hostos and boasts a 4.0 GPA. She plans to continue her education and major in French and minor in adolescence education as she follows a new dream of becoming an educator.
She said while the first two years was a challenge being the mother of three children, she thoroughly enjoyed her time at Hostos. "You hear some of the negative things people say about community colleges, but I loved it. Although I didn't meet too many people from France, I ran into French speaking (people) from Africa here. It was a great experience." |
