Greetings!

We hope that the May 2017edition of the Hot SHEET  newsletter finds you doing well and enjoying the spring season.

On April 11, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released their latest draft recommendation statement for prostate-specific antigen (PSA)–based screening for prostate cancer and issued a “C” rating for men who are between 55 and 69 years of age. This is an improvement over the previous “D” recommendation issued by the task force in 2012, which advised against all PSA screening. The new statement also recognizes that the decision on whether or not to have a PSA test should be specific to each individual based on an informed decision following a conversation between a man and his physician. Us TOO issued a press release in response .

The draft recommendation statement and draft evidence reviews are available for public comment through May 8, 2017. The Task Force has developed answers to frequently asked questions, a fact sheet, and an infographic to help clarify the draft recommendations. We encourage you to access this information, review the draft recommendation statement and submit comments at: https://screeningforprostatecancer.org/read-the-materials/ .

On Saturday, April 22, Us TOO hosted a Community Conversation on Prostate Cancer in Phoenix, Arizona, to discuss the importance of informed decision making for patients and caregivers specific to testing, active surveillance, treatment options for all phases of prostate cancer from an initial diagnosis to advancing disease, and management of side effects. We’d like to thank everyone who attended, along with the event sponsors Bayer, Janssen Oncology, and Southwest Oncology Centers; physician presenters Dr. Borhan, Dr. Grado, and Dr. Gordon; local Us TOO support group leaders who were instrumental in helping with event logistics and coordination: Chuck Voinovich, Ted Hinderman, Otto Sankey, John Sizer, Richard Miles and Robert Miller; and the survivor and caregivers who shared their personal experiences and knowledge about informed decision making: Dan Barker, Autumn Barber , and Debbie Sankey.
