A Note from Our ED
Amongst all of the world strife right now, I find peace in the elementary schools, knowing San Antonio Youth Literacy is a strong, flickering light in the midst of it all.
Reading aloud to our students is a valuable addition to our tutoring sessions. Our students have higher listening comprehension levels than reading comprehension levels, so they can understand and enjoy books that they could not read on their own.
Reminder to all Reading Buddies: The schools will be closed December 21 through January 1 for the winter break. Tutoring will resume the week of January 4, 2016. Happy holidays!
Please meet Joe Lamm, our December Reading Buddy of the Month! Joe is a member of the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation and is volunteering with SAYL for the second year at Serna Elementary. Joe started last year with two students but quickly offered to work with a third student when he realized another student needed a Reading Buddy.
Our Site Director for the month of December is Ms. Bonnie Reyes at Ball Elementary. Ms. Reyes has been serving as the school's Reading Coach and our Site Director at Ball for the last two years. She has been extremely helpful in coordinating the Reading Buddy Program; welcoming and always cheerful, Ms. Reyes is willing to help make the Reading Buddies feel comfortable at her school.
