AB Hotels Acquires Cooper Square Hotel
NEW YORK-AB Hotels has acquired the 105-room Cooper Square Hotel here with plans to rename it The Standard East Village.
AB Hotels, headed by developer Andre Balazs, already owns The Standard in the Meatpacking District and The Mercer in SoHo, two boutique hotels known for their celebrity following. AB Hotels didn't disclose the price it paid for its newest acquisition, which has been in bankruptcy, but local media reported the cost to be $80 million.
The Cooper Square has been controversial since opening five years ago. At 21 stories and with a contemporary design, including a glass exterior, it stood out from its low-rise surroundings. More damaging, late-night noise from an outdoor lounge created bad blood with its residential neighbors, who staged a series of publicity-grabbing protests against the hotel. ... Full Story
