How Are You Doing?

The Check In. . .
How many times a year, month, week or day do you ask yourself, "how am I doing?" All day long, we walk around asking people how they're doing, usually hoping to hear, "good and you?" and move on. The same goes for people asking us. We don't usually tell people how we are really doing. We figure no one wants to hear the truth anyway. So, off we go about our lives carrying all of life with us.

We know how much money we have in the bank. We know what we're eating for lunch. We know the date of our birthday. We know so much; however, we rarely know how our souls are doing along this journey of life. Too often we ignore the signs that try to prevent us from getting too derailed.

Pausing to check in on yourself is about self preservation. When we don't pay attention to the signs, we end up in life's ditches of illness, grumpiness, negativity, unhappiness, emptiness, and more. Don't be afraid to ask the questions. While the process of finding out how you're doing may be uncomfortable, the results can be life changing for the better.

Simply ask yourself . . .
  • How am I feeling about life?
  • How am I feeling about work?
  • Where am I experiencing the most unfulfillment?
  • Am I taking care of my body, mind and soul?
  • What would I like to change?
  • How can I find contentment now?
  • In what ways might I recognize the brighter side of my circumstances?

Then . . .

  • Sit with the answers
  • Look back over life to see if any of your points of pain were created through past events
  • Boil life down to the basics
  • Take time to list the things you're grateful for. Trust me. Do it!
  • Determine what it will take to make changes in the areas you named
  • Take comfort in the identification of your points of pain so that you can name them when they arise

At the end of the day, there are just a few things that will have mattered. Our experiences, the people we loved, the people who loved us, our service to others and the purpose we served will reign supreme.

No matter how you're doing, you have an opportunity to be doing better. Remember what's important and what will make the look in the rearview mirror a pleasant one.

Don't neglect yourself. Be honest with how you're feeling and acknowledge when you need to make changes.

I once worked with a woman who has since passed away. One day as we crossed paths in the hall way, she said, "hey Monica, how are you doing?" I said "fine" and began to walk away. She grabbed my hand and said, "really, how are you doing?"

It stopped me in my tracks. I remember feeling extremely cared for in that moment. Instead of brushing off her ask, I paused to tell her how I was really doing. I continued to think about how I was doing throughout the day. It prompted me to check in with myself.

This was almost 10 years ago. Ever since that day, I've been intentional about checking in with myself to see how I'm doing. The results have been higher levels of peace, less regret and a sense of being firmly rooted in myself.

It was worth addressing every painful thought and every past experience.

Sincerely, Monica
