When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
Happy Mother's Day
How Baby Boxes are helping new moms this Mother's Day
Would you let your baby sleep in a box? Millions of mothers all over the world do every day! In fact, in Finland, where every new mom receives a Baby Box and educational materials, the rate of death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is 50% of that in the United States.

Two months ago, armed with this knowledge, two of our social work interns, in collaboration with our Obstetrics (OB) Program, started a new Baby Box initiative for patients.

Through a non-profit called Baby Box University (BBU) , each pregnant woman in our OB program can qualify for a free Baby Box. Our social work interns help patients complete educational videos and a short quiz on BBU's website. Once they pass the quiz a new box is shipped to the clinic and we distribute it to the patient.

"The perseverance and the desire to learn that our patients have is truly inspirational," says OB Program Coordinator Martha Santacoloma. "Each of our new moms is thrilled to have a safe, free way to care for their newborn infant."
Elizabeth (right) came to the United States from El Salvador two years ago. Having had little education she cannot read or write in Spanish, her native language.

Despite not having her own transportation, Elizabeth came faithfully every Wednesday for her appointment with the OB provider. Afterward, she met with Masters of Social Work intern Sarah Palazzolo (right.) Sarah helped Elizabeth create an account, watch the videos, and complete the quiz.

Elizabeth is eagerly awaiting the birth of her child and is thankful for the help CrossOver provides.
What do baby boxes have to do with SIDS?

While the exact cause of SIDS is unknown, the items in a baby's crib and her sleeping position can increase the risk of SIDS.

The safest way for a newborn to sleep is on her back with no fluffy toys or blankets around her.

The Baby Box is designed to be the perfect spot for a baby's good night's sleep!
