SUCCESS!
Assistive Technology: A Necessity for Success

Assistive technology in K-12 classrooms, by definition, is designed to "improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability." While the word "technology" automatically conjures up images of cutting-edge electronics, some assistive technology is possible with just simple accommodations. Whether high-tech or simple in design, assistive technology has the ability to transform the learning experiences for the children who benefit.

The KSDE Technical Assistance System Network (TASN) is jointly administered by Pittsburg State University and the Center for Technical Assistance for Excellence in Special Education (TAESE) at Utah State University. TASN's goal is to effectively support Kansas districts' systematic implementation of evidenced-based practices resulting in improved results for children in Kansas.

TASN establishes communication and work alignment among all technical assistance providers in the network. Evaluation activities focus on identifying the important indicators and implementation drivers that support moving the TASN through the predictable stages of implementation. These indicators and drivers are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the system and its components.

TASN uses a self-correcting feedback loop (SCFL) which supposes that system activities and results data are inextricably linked with one another and that it is this interchange that guides TASN decision-making. TASN uses frequently collected data to monitor the impact of implementation activities so that system supports and activities may be adjusted quickly.

TASN has two primary goals: (1) management and coordination among all TASN providers, and, (2) a data-driven evaluation plan is used to monitor and evaluate individual projects within the TASN and the system as a whole.

Check the TASN website calendar for great educational opportunities for professionals, support staff, and parents.

Frequently Asked Question

"Should We Sue the School?"

No threats should ever be made. And you should never say anything that you cannot "back up" with data, statistics, or documentation. "I never say anything in an IEP meeting that I am not prepared to do", says Advocate Susan Bruce.
