WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT:
How Do We Improve Success?

Fellow Democrats,

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting with former Dallas County Democratic Party (DCDP) Chair Darlene Ewing. She asked how things were going, and I told her the truth: "Darlene, it's hard to follow in your footsteps."

After all, we're talking about the woman who served as DCDP Chair for 10 years. It was during her tenure that Dallas County turned blue; and it was while she was Chair that the Coordinated Campaign became a cyclone of success.

On the other hand, because I am competitive by nature, Darlene Ewing has done us all a favor. She has presented to us a challenge: How Do We Improve Success? This is a good problem to have. Imagine the alternative. We could be starting at square one. Think about President Barack Obama, when he took office in 2008, inheriting the devastated economy left to him by President George W. Bush.

We are standing on the shoulders of giants. Thanks to past DCDP Chairs, we get to start at a high point instead of a low point. We are lucky to have so many past DCDP Chairs who are still active in the Party, such as Darlene Ewing, David Carlock, Bill Howell and Judge Ken Molberg. We are at the top of the hill, looking eagerly at the mountain. Yes, we have a blue county. Almost all county positions are held by Democrats. But we want more. For the sake of the Party and the residents of Dallas County, we want a blue county with even more Democrats in state offices, such as state representatives, state senators and members of Congress. This is a challenge, which we gladly accept.

In addition to campaigning, we are raising money for the Party. Most of our fundraisers have existed for years. They were already fun, successful and well-attended. Therein lies the challenge. For each fundraiser held in the past ten months, I have plotted with the DCDP staff on how we can make a good event even better. With sponsorships, co-hosts, donations, auctions, and product sales, your DCDP has raised more money and recruited more participants at each event. This week, DCDP hosted a fun and successful "Burger Bash", adding for the first time sponsorships and a silent auction. The event was attended by over 100 Democrats, and we more than doubled our net profit on this event. We are well aware that this success could not be achieved, but for the hard work of the prior administrations and the many volunteers of past years. This is what pushes us to work harder and to be more creative.

As I begin my 11th month as DCDP Chair, I am initiating a new fundraiser, which will hopefully appeal to Democrats, young and older, throughout the county: Since everyone has a mother and/or a mentor, we are inviting all Dallas County Democrats to donate to the Dallas County Democratic Party in honor of your mother and/or mentor. Make a donation on or before Friday, May 6th here (Mother's Day is May 8th); give us the name and street address for you and for the honoree; and the DCDP staff will send a card to the honoree, letting them know that an honorarium has been made to the Party by you on their behalf. This way, you will make your mother and/or mentor happy, and you will better equip the DCDP to meet the challenges of this election year. Help us meet the challenge of improving an already successful Party.

Meanwhile, we will keep fighting to get more Democrats elected. Will you join us in the critical fight to elect Democrats who will stand up for real Texas values? We need you. Here are some ways you can help:

Yours Democratically,

Carol Donovan, DCDP Chair
