How Does the Bible Define a False Convert?

The most terrifying words any professing Christian could ever hear would be the irreversible words of our Lord Jesus Christ, "Depart from Me, I never knew you" (Mat. 7:23). Tragically, Jesus will turn away "many" who call Him Lord on judgment day. They are people who may have been loyal to their denomination, who did mighty works and prophesied in His name, yet they will be unqualified to enter into heaven (Mat. 7:21-23). The phrase "Depart from Me" is the final sentence to hell as noted when Jesus uses it again in Mat. 25:41. He declares: "Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." You would think this unexpected and horrifying judgment would cause Christians to wonder who these people are and, if in fact, they could be one of them. Some would dismiss any idea that the warning applies to them because they know they believe in Jesus. But how do they know their faith is genuine?

James describes two kinds of faith in his epistle. He contrasts a living, genuine faith that justifies with a dead, spurious faith that gives only a false hope. James is warning professing Christians, whose faith is barren and unfruitful, that they are foolish if they don't recognize their faith is dead and useless (Jas. 2:17, 20). Only genuine faith bears fruit. Faith without works is the faith of the devils, mere intellectual assent without repentance. When James says, "show me your faith," he is asking for evidence of their new life in Christ (Jas. 2:18). Since faith is invisible, it cannot be seen by other men. Likewise, no one can see a gusting wind, but they can see its effects. True faith is vindicated by those who are "doers of the word and not merely hearers" (Jas. 1:22). That is why James said: "I will show you my faith by my works" (Jas. 2:18).

James is in harmony with our Lord Jesus who said those who bear fruit prove to be His disciples (Jn. 15:8). They are the branches that abide in Christ, the Vine. A professing Christian who bears no fruit is separated from Christ (John 15:6). The Lord's illustration makes a distinction between true and false converts, those who bear fruit and those who do not. The fruit reveals whether one is in Christ or separated from Christ. Fruit that glorifies God is the evidence of an abiding, living faith in Christ Jesus. True justifying faith will be evidenced by works and obedience to God's Word. Those abiding in the Vine will live to glorify God while turning from "lawlessness" (Mat. 7:23; John 15:4-8).

What did Jesus mean when He said, "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness"? Clearly, He is omniscient and knows everyone. However, He does not know everyone in the sense of having an abiding, intimate, covenantal relationship with them as His disciples. This is similar to those who say they know Jesus, but do not know Him in a relational, experiential way. They may know that He was a historical person and even believe some facts about what He did, but they may not be personally involved with Him or experience Him in an intimate bond of love. It was for this reason, Paul said, "I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Phil. 3:8).

Just as no one will know they are deceived until they are confronted with the truth, no one will know they are a false convert until they experience true conversion. May I lovingly invite you to examine yourself today and test your faith to see if it is genuine (2 Cor. 13:5). If you are truly saved by God's grace, it will give you further assurance of salvation. However, if you fail the tests that are given in James 2 and 1 John, trust the objective Word of God and not your subjective profession of faith. We have several links and resources available if you would like to study this important issue further. You can listen to the broadcast interview I did with my pastor, Jesse Barrington, on False Converts and Biblical Assurance. We also offer a DVD message on False Converts in the Church. If you would like to know how to help people examine their faith, listen to this message given by Jesse Barrington on "Walking Others through Biblical Assurance."
Five Activities Often Mistaken for Evangelism

Mark Dever offers five activities of well-meaning Christians that are often mistaken for evangelism. True evangelism is not giving a personal testimony of conversion. When we give an account of our changed life, it can be wonderful and inspiring but, by itself, is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Another activity mistaken for evangelism is participating in social actions or political affairs. While demonstrating compassion and kindness by our actions is a good and appropriate behavior for Christians, such actions are not evangelism, unless they are accompanied with a proclamation of the Gospel. Letters From Around the World

Dear Mike,
It is so difficult to watch my husband participate in the Catholic Church's
new program called ARISE, that teaches Catholics how to walk in the steps of Jesus. The twisting of scripture in this study is unbelievable. On the surface it looks good, but one must remember that it is a different gospel and a different Jesus that they teach. Many evangelicals do not know the teachings of Catholicism. I did not know myself until I began reading the catechism, I was astonished. I always thought that if you took away all the pomp and ritual "stuff" that it was the same Jesus, but the opposite is true. But when you scrap away the trimmings, there is no common ground. I have shown my husband there are two different gospels, but he thinks the Catholic Church is very Biblical and does not see any difference. I have talked briefly with him because he becomes very agitated when I defend the Biblical Jesus. He gets very angry and leaves the house. I wait for him to want to talk about it, but he always reacts so horribly that I don't want to discuss anything with him. I pray constantly for God to open his eyes, to convict him of his sin and to draw him to true salvation in Christ alone. I pray for God to send workers into his life to witness to him. Thank you so very much for your website. It helps so much to know that I am not alone. You have many great articles and videos on how to witness and they keep me focused on right ways to present the Gospel to Catholics instead of becoming side tracked by all the weird rituals they practice. Please pray for me and for my husband's salvation.

Mary is Source of Strength for Evangelism

Church leaders at a conference in Mexico City emphasized unity and Christ-centered witness, as they discussed Our Lady of Guadalupe's ongoing call to evangelize. The event began with a procession bringing an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe into the gathering. "Our Lady of Guadalupe is the mother of the Mexicans, but she is also the mother of everyone who draws near to her," Archbishop Pierre, apostolic nuncio to Mexico, said Nov. 16. Cardinal Ouellet said we can draw strength from Our Lady of Guadalupe so that we may be disciples for her sake. He said she is "the foundation of the New World. Let us keep a fixed eye on our mother; she waits for us and she is with us." Read more.

Mike's Comment: My heart is always troubled when I see Catholics led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. Just as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, Catholics are being deceived by a perversion and distortion of the biblical Mary (2 Cor. 11:3).
Pope Francis Mourns Death of Buddhist Patriarch

Pope Francis sent his condolences for the death of the Supreme Buddhist Patriarch. The head of Buddhist monks in Thailand died Oct. 24 at the age of 100 years. Francis conveys to all the Buddhist Brothers and Sisters in the Kingdom of Thailand his most sincere condolences, assuring them of his spiritual closeness at this very sad time. He prayed for the departed, while beseeching God to grant consolation and comfort to all those who mourn his passing. The president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue voiced hope that the memory of the Supreme Patriarch may "be a support for those who are now in sorrow and an encouragement for those who will benefit [from] his spiritual legacy."

Mike's Comment: The pope clearly does not know that praying for the dead is unbiblical. That is because, "It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Heb. 9: 27).
Pope Plays Pharmacist

Pope Francis displayed a rosary in a box that was designed to resemble a packet of pills, during his traditional Sunday appearance overlooking St. Peter's Square. Joking that he's like a pharmacist, Pope Francis is promoting praying the rosary as medicine for the heart. About 80,000 tourists and Romans packed the square on a warm Sunday day. Source here.

Mike's Comment: The only cure for a wicked and deceitful heart is a heart transplant. Only God can "remove the heart of stone...and give you a heart of flesh" (Ez. 36:26).
Obama Closes Embassy in the Vatican

The Obama administration, in what's been called an egregious slap in the face to the Vatican, has moved to shut down the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See. The move to the larger American embassy to Italy is justified primarily on the grounds of enhanced security. However, ambassador James Nicholson said, "The Holy See is a pivot point for international affairs and a major listening post for the United States, and its an insult to American Catholics and to the Vatican." He rejected the security argument, calling it a "smokescreen." Read more.
Blood of Pope John Paul II Tours Florida

Prayers and tears, hope and faith filled the room. One by one, hundreds of students waited for the chance to view, to touch, to kiss a precious relic of Pope John Paul II - a vial of blood drawn just days before his death in April 2005. "This relic has been traveling all over the world," Sister Maria Socias told the crowd gathered at McCarthy High School, reminding them that the beloved pontiff will become a saint on April 27. "You are privileged. Not everyone will get the chance to venerate the relic of John Paul II." The sacred relic travels the globe. "This will hopefully be a moment you will never forget for the rest of your life," said Socias, a member of The Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Watch video here.

Mike's Comment: I pray these Catholics will repent of their veneration of the pope's blood and put their faith in the precious blood of Jesus. Without the shedding of His blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Heb. 9:22).
Image of Virgin Mary Surfaces on Floor

An image of the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared on the floor of a school used as an evacuation center where an earthquake hit in Calape, Bohol. An evacuee said they were praying the rosary in front of an altar when they noticed a likeness of the Mother of Perpetual Help seemingly engraved on the floor. She said that they tried to wipe off the image, thinking that it was only due to dirt. But the image stayed even after they tried cleaning it off. Evacuees placed a big rosary around the image. Read more.
World Council of Churches Seeks Unity

A symbolic act of pouring water into one common vessel, carried out by religious leaders representing Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist faiths, marked the significance of water in various religious traditions. This action took place at the World Council of Churches (WCC) 10th Assembly in the Republic of Korea. In almost all religions water is a symbol of cleansing, justice, and peace; and it is therefore profoundly relevant to the WCC assembly theme. The ceremony came as a joint initiative of the WCC's program for inter-religious dialogue and cooperation. It was opened by the WCC general secretary who offered Christian theological reflections on water. Read more.

Mike's Comment: The only unity worth seeking is the unity of the Spirit. "For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and all were made to drink of one Spirit"      (1 Cor. 12:13).
Vatican Makes DVD on Eucharistic Adoration

The Vatican has published a new DVD that will help the faithful rediscover the importance of Eucharistic Adoration. The video contains testimonies of conversion thanks to Eucharistic Adoration. One Cardinal who encouraged the production of the video believes "the New Evangelization will not be possible if there is no Adoration." Read more.
