As naturopathic doctors, we see on a daily basis the profound positive effect that natural therapies have. Our large, loyal patient practice knows this as well. At present, the world of natural medicine is largely separated from the world of conventional medicine. Different philosophies, different therapies, different perspectives.
A few years ago, a few brilliant doctors coined the term, "integrative medicine." Integrative medicine may be defined as bringing together the best of both worlds for the good of the patient. In its purest form, integrative medicine has no place for egos, doctrines or "isms." Just service. At Pacific Naturopathic, we hold this vision in our consciousness. Meanwhile, the articles in this newsletter take a look at the past, the present and our hope for the future of the medical system.
In this newsletter, Dr. Connie looks at her childhood relationship with the medical system and compares it to the present system; Dr. Marcel also looks at the present system and discusses how it changes; Dr. Connie looks at how light and sound therapies are being incorporated into the tech/natural medicine world; and Jane H. discusses the tools she uses in assisting people on the road to health. As always, there are several other features which you will discover as you scroll down.
Hernandez Center articles include how to transform stress of a cancer diagnosis and two studies on how certain foods can curtail aggressive breast cancer manifestation.
May all beings be healthy and happy!

Dr. Connie's Musings...

The Changing World of Medicine
When I was a child, Dr. Mosher, our family doc, would arrive at our home with his mysterious

black bag. I escaped his ministrations, while my sister, who suffered from ear infections, was the unwilling recipient of his penicillin. My 4 year old self offered the good doctor a wooden apple and was then terrified that he would break his teeth before he realized it wasn't an edible apple. This doctor delighted in his medicine and in his interactions with our family.
Much in medicine has changed since those days. Family docs are rare, and rarer still the family doc who would travel from home to home. Simple home treatment options, from mustard packs to salt gargles to chamomile tea, were known and utilized by mothers. Penicillin was the miracle drug of the day, and the prevailing illnesses were acute, infectious and often responsive to antibiotics.
These days, though we see occasional sore throats and mild respiratory ailments, we are much more apt to see patients with constellations of chronic and unusual symptoms that don't quite fit any diagnostic criteria and for which no miracle medicine has been found. Debilitating fatigue; crippling anxiety, depression and insomnia; autoimmunity; cancers; and who knows what?
Most of our patients will not have seen a family doc. While we once had an abundance of general

practitioners, the first stop now is generally an internist. At the office, impersonal assistants weigh, measure, ask questions (often with their backs to the patient) and peck out responses on the computer keys. The internist enters, and while some have a wide scope of knowledge and practice, many others function as doorkeepers in managed care settings, referring patients off to specialists.
Modern medical care depends on affixing a diagnosis to the patient and to the patient's records. Insurance demands that diagnosis in order to reimburse the doctor for the patient's care.
In most cases, with the exception of an annual physical exam, and other debatably preventive tests and procedures, prevention and optimization of health are not reimbursable.
The doctor also needs the diagnosis, as modern conventional medicine depends on the pharmaceutical management of diagnosable disorders, the preferred medicines being accepted as "standard of care". But, as noted above, unfortunately, most of our patients suffer from conditions for which there is no clear diagnosis and no pharmaceuticals to cure what ails them.

Medicine is a practice, conditioned by cultural norms. And we only know what we know when we know it. What we think we know may be proven to be false as scientific understanding evolves. We are now able to image more accurately, outline biochemical and physiologic reactions, map genes to uncover genetic determinants of illness. Treatment options lag, as energy medicine is not yet well accepted in standard of care medicine.
However, as surely as hacksaws fell to surgical instrumentation and then to laser surgeries, our current medical practices will fall to subtler treatment modalities which address disorders in the energetic patterning which underlies and sustains all of physical form. (See my next article, below, for several newish therapies which marry technology to light and sound.)
|
Changing the Medical Paradigm
(it isn't easy)
|
As naturopathic doctors, many of the therapeutic approaches we advocate are looked upon with skeptical eyes by most of the conventional medical establishment. Included in this list are clinical nutrition, intravenous nutrient therapy, herbal medicine, supplements, holistic care of chronic illness, oh, and the big black box of woo-woo mystery, energetic medicine.
In the medical world, if an approach is not a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, it's most likely non-sense. One clarification: Dr. Connie and I know many excellent, open-minded, even transcendent conventional physicians. Not surprisingly, these docs are beloved by their patients and have successful, satisfying careers. They are a minority. They do not represent the mainstream.
The primary therapeutic approaches taught in American medical schools are how to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs, perform surgery and administer radiation. Anything that deviates from this therapeutic triumvirate is either secondary or fringe medicine. Nutrition and counseling are all but ignored. Energy medicine is anathema.
In all fairness, conventional medical schools do offer excellent scientific and diagnostic teaching. Modern heroic (life-saving) medicine is almost miraculous. Research on understanding how the human organism functions and responds to challenges is astonishing. It's just how this information is applied that is questionable.
As a medical director for an insurance company several years ago, I quickly discovered that the entire health care system in the United States is financially driven. The good thing is that competition for dollars drives research. Among the many questionable aspects of this system is that mainstream medicine is painfully slow to adapt to changes because changes cost money. And because of the health care system's sheer bulk and systemic dominance, it influences its adherents to unquestionably support it and to decry any and all questioning of its own practices as blasphemy. This has always been the case.
But change is consumer-driven and, in the long term, change is irresistible. Let's do a "where are they now" and look at a few examples of medical practices that were considered state-of-the-art (one or two still

being performed today!):
-- Unsterile procedure. In the 19th century, the dominant medical paradigm looked upon sterile procedure in the operating room as radical.
-- Trepanation was done by drilling a hole in the skull to release demons from the skull.
-- Lobotomy involved severing connections in the brain's prefrontal lobe with an implement resembling an icepick.
-- Lithotomy
for removing bladder stones. Here's a strange one. A blade was passed into the patient's bladder through the soft bit of flesh between the sex organ and anus. The surgeons then inserted their (ungloved) fingers or surgical instruments into the rectum or urethra to remove the stone. An extremely painful procedure with a 50 percent mortality rate.
|
 |
Bloodletting kit
|
 |
-- Bloodletting. The procedure was based on a strange scientific theory that humans had four "humours" -- blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. An imbalance in these humours was thought to result in disease. Lancets and blades were used to open superficial veins, and in some cases arteries, to release blood in an attempt to restore balance to these vital fluids. This went on daily for an extended period.
-- Bariatric Surgery. Still performed in the 21st century.
The concept behind the procedure is that weight loss can be achieved either by implanting a medical device - for example, a gastric band - or shockingly, by removing part of the stomach itself.
-- Mercury treatment. Today, mercury is understood to be a neurologically poisonous metal that causes severely harmful effects after prolonged exposure. Historically, mercury was used medically for numerous conditions, and also used as a treatment for syphilis. Mercury is still used in some vaccine formulas and in dental amalgams.
In the 21st century, medical practices that I think will be considered barbaric by future generations include mass vaccinations, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, mammograms, colonoscopies, and many types of surgery.
It is also beginning to look like the modern naturopathic doctor will someday soon be regarded in the same light as the traditional family doctor. It may be inevitable that conventional medical world will eventually work in partnership with naturopathic doctors in the best interests of the patient.
I hope this is so.

Light and Sound Therapies
|
We human beings are beings of energy. We, and everything else in creation, have a unique vibratory signature. All of these vibrations, whether internal or external, interact with each other, affect each other and shape us. We are literally formed by vibrations. Every cell, every organ, every tissue, every microbe vibrates at a specific frequency. Opposing frequencies can flat line each other. Resonant frequencies can strengthen each other.
Throughout history, shamans and medicine people have intuitively understood and used resonant frequencies of sound and light in healing.
20th century medicine saw the development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools based on electromagnetic energy and resonant frequencies, though many such tools and techniques were (and are) dismissed as black box therapies, with aspersions and legal penalties cast on the practitioners. What is not understood has been feared in all ages.
The truth is that early instruments were the model T's of energy medicine. We're waiting for the Teslas. Pioneers throughout the world have continued to develop techniques for measuring and treating with vibratory frequencies, much of the research coming from Eastern Europe and Russia.
Two avenues of approach, in particular, have recently captured my attention. The first is photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, which uses lasers, LEDs and broadband light, visible and infrared, for clinical effect. More on PBM next month as we (Drs. Connie and Marcel) are attending the conference of the International Society for Medical Laser Applications next month.
Meanwhile, I am personally experimenting with several PBM devices which can be used at home. These Vielight devices are sourced from Canada. They utilize intranasal applicators to deliver light energy to the blood. The applicator is clipped to the nose, and left in place for 25 minutes during which time the blood is treated as it flows by the applicator.
Laser light energy at 630-640 nanometers has been found to influence blood cells, changing the viscosity of the blood, healing the vascular endothelium, positively affecting the lipid profile of the blood. My personal experiment is to see if this therapy affects my known cardiovascular parameters.
A wavelength of 810 affects the brain. Evidence supports the use of this wavelength in treating mild cognitive impairment, migraine, stroke and Parkinson's Disease. The combination of the nasal applicator and a transcranial cluster of lights (worn externally, like a cap) is being used now in clinical trials in the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. I'm experimenting with the nasal applicator alone to see if it improves my sleep.
(If you're interested in experimenting, contact Vielight and mention the code "pacnat" for a discount on the pricing.)
The second therapy, a sound therapy, relies on a device that can sort out the frequencies present in a voice sample. The resultant voiceprint reveals missing frequencies, which, in turn, reveal the energetics behind various physical and emotional problems. Resonant therapies, including color therapy, can then be suggested. Audio recordings of the missing frequencies are given to help restore balance both to the voice itself and to resonant physical and emotional ills.
Receiving my own voiceprint, I was sufficiently impressed with the accuracy to consider bringing a device of this nature into Pacific Naturopathic. If you have interest in trying this therapy, please let us know:(PacificNaturopathic@gmail.com).
Stay tuned!

HoneySown Herbs: "Depths of Moku"
(Sweet, Delicious Sleep)
Many people are familiar with medicinal herbs in the form of pills or tinctures which are widely available on the market. A lot of those same people, however, have more than likely never tried herbal honey.
All over the world,
honey has been used in herbal preparations as a vessel to deliver and enhance the healing properties of herbs. Raw honey itself is a medicinal treasure, full of active enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Honey has a seemingly endless list of benefits to the human body for which much research has been devoted. It is a truly incredible substance many of us take for granted, and the complex colonies of honeybees which produce it are equally fascinating.
The journey of this amazing small company into herbal honey began with bees, the same bees that they continue to care for on their small, humble farm on the Big Island of Hawaii. The beekeepers have combined their love of bees and honey with their passion for herbal medicine to bring you what may be some of the most potent and pure herbal tonics available.
We will be carrying several different honey/herbal formulas in our office, including "Depths of Moku" (pictured). Here is what the folks at HoneySown have to say about this product:
"If trouble sleeping is what brought you here, you need look no further. Many times herbal supplements for occasional sleeplessness only contain one or two herbs, and those herbs may not always work for everyone. That is why Depths of Mukuâ„¢ includes multiple calming, soothing, and sleepy herbs that when combined are sure to do the trick. This is a very potent blend that has yet to disappoint.
Valerian has been shown in studies to allow people to fall asleep more quickly while also having an overall better quality of sleep. Its sedating medicinal qualities have been documented for hundreds of years and today there are countless supplements containing the herb. Not only is it a great remedy for insomnia, but valerian also helps in treating anxiety and high blood pressure. (Organic)
Skullcap shares many of the same benefits as valerian while also being anti-inflammatory and helpful with all sorts of anxiety-related issues. Native to North America, skullcap thrives in the wild and was even used by Native Americans and later Europeans as a treatment for rabies. Its restorative properties help support and nourish the nervous system while reducing stress, making it a key component of this well-balanced sleep aid. (Organic)
California Poppy is a mild sedative that not only helps with insomnia but also depression, aches and pains, anxiety, and general emotional instability. A calming remedy for times of stress, california poppy, in combination with the other herbs of this formula, allows the body to relax fully into a deep sleep. (Organic)
Kava has not been traditionally used as a sleep aid, but it certainly can assist in that area. This plant has been used in the Pacific Islands (including here in Hawaii) for many centuries for various ceremonial purposes, for which it is turned into a drink and passed around from person to person. The effects are calming, sedative, and euphoric. (Organic)
Passionflower is a soothing herb known for its ability to reduce anxiety, agitation, lower blood pressure, improve sleep and promote a balanced mood. (Organic)"
The HoneySown products have been ordered, shipped by the farm, and should arrive any day. Please phone the front desk to check on arrival. Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel tried "Depths of Moku" last night (delicious!) and slept wonderfully. More information on other formulas to follow in future newsletters.
Price: $22.00 for 12 ounces (same as on-line from the company).

No More Back-Street Healing!
|
I make no claim to be a doctor of natural medicine but I AM a certified clinical hypnotherapist and an EFT practitioner. In effect, I support the work and therapies prescribed by Naturopaths with the mind/body techniques I specialize in.
We are living in an age of discovery. The tools available to researchers now have opened up new way to heal the body without resorting to heavy-duty surgery or drugs. Of course, modern medicine offers these and they can be life saving, but the natural options available now are just amazing.
Once you get past how simple and easy EFT Tapping is and how weird it looks you literally have in your hand a very powerful healing tool. As Gary Craig, the founder of EFT said, "Use it for anything".
And indeed
there have been peer-reviewed studies of EFT for Academic Performance, Addictions, Cravings, Eating Disorders and Weight Loss, Anger, Anxiety, Depression Learning Disorders, Pain, Physical Conditions, Phobias, PTSD and Trauma.
Consider Kaiser Permanente, for example. It is one of the largest hospital systems in the US, taking care of more than 10 million patients each year.
Kaiser's peer-reviewed publication, The Permanente Journal, recently published practice guidelines for using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) with patients diagnosed with PTSD (Church, Stern et al., 2017).
Additional research has shown that EFT significantly increases positive emotions, such as hope and enjoyment, and decreases negative emotional states, including anxiety. All this occurs because it specifically targets your amygdala and hippocampus, the parts of your brain that perceive whether or not something is a threat.
Other studieshave shown EFT to lower cortisol levels.
So why should I care about lowering my cortisol level?
For years scientists have known that
elevated cortisol levels are one of the biggest problems in the body. Not only does it
interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increase blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease but also is a chief culprit in weight gain, particularly belly fat. That's right, the high blood sugar levels caused by a constant barrage of
cortisol promotes the storage of fat in the abdomen. OK, now you know and can possibly do something about it.
Hypnosis too is a mind/body approach that goes hand-in-hand with natural medicine. Like EFT there are many studies now that show how effective it is in helping heal the body.
So many of our physical problems are connected to our minds and the neuronal circuits that are habituated in the brain.Once a habit or belief is set up, it is hard to stop it. Enter hypnosis and its ability to get past old mental programming and installing new beliefs.
Hypnosis is not mind control because you are always in control. But when you allow hypnosis to work then the changes you want to make are able to take root.
For example, your naturopath may want you to change your diet but you have difficulty doing so, sometimes even when your health is compromised. Enter hypnosis to help you do so without resistance.
And did you know that hypnosis is a natural pre-surgery treatment? There are many studies showing,
"Hypnosis has been demonstrated to effectively control pain and emotional distress and to improve recovery...results revealed a significant, large effect size...indicating that surgical patients in hypnosis treatment groups had better outcomes than 89% of patients in control groups."
(Montgomery GH, Schnur JB, Kravits K. Hypnosis for cancer care: over 200 years young. CA Cancer J Clin. 2013;63(1):31-44)
I have used hypnosis with many pre-surgery clients and all have had great outcomes and faster healing.
Not only is there more research than ever now in how successful EFT and hypnosis are but also both these healing modalities are spawning offshoots. And these offshoots are involved in new research too.
No longer do I have to waver about the legitimacy about what I practice, I have evidence-based studies to back me up now. And I must say, it feels good to leave the perception of woo-woo behind.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic
- diagnostic considerations -
|
Prior to the advent of mammograms, potential breast cancers were discovered, either by the patient or by the doctor, by palpating the breast. Problematic signs, then and now, include lumps, bumps, skin changes, inverted nipples, nipple discharge, swollen axillary lymph nodes. These days, though we can image in multiple ways ranging from mammogram to MRI to ultrasound to thermography, palpation continues to be valuable.
A number of our patients have reported that,
though their mammogram readings seemingly revealed normal breast tissue, they discovered a breast cancer through self breast exam. Breast thermography, too, can appear normal when a cancer exists, but is quiescent. We therefore generally recommend an anatomic work up when problematic signs are present, but thermography appears to be normal.

What We Offer
at the
Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care
|
There is light in the darkness
Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.
The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer
(including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.
Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience. And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.
The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

How to Transform the Mental/Emotional
Stress of a Cancer Diagnosis
|
Over the last 40 years, science has discovered a simple tool that can benefit not just psychological conditions like depression but physical healing as well.
This technique is effective because it can help "reprogram" harmful and long-held subconscious belief patterns and replace them with healthier ones.
If you're holding on to feelings that you haven't quite processed or just can't get over, you owe it to yourself to discover this amazing technique and set yourself free. The technique is offered in our
office by Jane Hernandez (see her article, above).

"Turn off" Aggressive Breast Cancer Genes and Make Tumors Treatable With These Two Foods
By Dr. David Jockers DC, MS, CSCS
|
Yet another study on the influence that diet has on cancer...
Diet plays a major role in both the prevention of cancer and the contributing factors of cancer growth and cancer metastasis. In fact, 75%-85% of cancers diagnosed in one study in the United States showed that unhealthy lifestyle factors were the primary causes of these diagnosis and may have been prevented with improved dietary changes.
A new study finds that eating brussel sprouts and drinking green tea can "turn off" aggressive breast cancer genes and make tumors treatable, as
reported by The Daily Mail

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center
--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--
|
Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.
But intravenous therapy is not just for cancer patients. More than half of our IV patients come for various "cocktails" to help them ward off infections and optimize their health. We offer a number of individualized versions of the famous "Myers Cocktail." Read about the Myers Cocktail HERE
Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
