Digital Doubles in Film &
TV
At times an actor can be cast in a film or television series becasue they resemble a celebrity. Maybe they are hired as a body double, a lookalike, or a family member. But what if the character needs to perform a series of stunts that even a professional stunts person can't do?
Computer generated elements have been used in films since the 1960s, but it was in the 1980s where we really started to see more visual and special effects being used.
Tron was actually the first film to have an extensive use of 3D CGI and very early facial animation.
Using a digital cha
racter, or digital double, can give a scene more flexibility when being filmed. With the help of visual effects, a character can be thrown off buildings, set on fire, shot, broken into particles, and can morph into anything. The best part is you can do take after take until the scene has met your expectation.
We believe in time digital doubles will be integrated with real talent and will be undetected. Between 3D scanning, texturing and motion capture, we're working towards creating a completely virtual/augmented reality viewable through tools like the
Oculus Rift.

3D Scanning the World
Are you building a partial environment or perhaps an entire city for your project? As technology gets better and we look to create more and more digital assets, it is just a matter of taking things from the real world and bringing them into the digital world.
You can re-create a city and populate the streets with vehicles from a certain era or go back 10 to 15 years for a variety. This can also work for planes, trains and other types of vehicles. You can also 3D scan props such as weapons and instruments (musical, medical, industrial, etc.) and insert them into the environment.
The questions to ask yourself when deciding whether or not to use digital assets are:
- Can it blend into the project?
- Can it be lit to the environment?
- Is it scalable or is the right scale coming in?
There are some challenges that come along with 3D scanning. For example, it is difficult to 3D scan hair, shiny materials/objects and scanning translucent or transparent items need extra care. It can be done but you need to make sure the realistic factor is not lost in the process.
At some point most of what you see on screen will be fed by large databases of composited or edited digital content. 3D scanners will be more diverse and simple to use. Formats will not be an issue, nor will any other challenge we face with visual effects. All we need to do is bridge that gap with time and development.

tax incentives. Local vendors save you on time and cost and are readily available for last minute changes such as shooting times and talent availability.
