How do you know at age 16 what to do in life? I STILL don't know! LOL Yes, we have started college visits with our oldest. I guess you just take a stab in the dark. A giant leap of faith. You pick a major based on the classes you've liked so far or pick one from something that sparked your interest. And then you re-adjust as you go along. I'm really good at that last part. Always fine tuning. Looking at things that no longer serve us and letting those go. Adding those things we are drawn to that make our hearts sing. I am lucky and blessed to do what I love for a living! Communicating with and connecting others during the day and dancing (ahem, exercising) with whoever shows up at my classes at night! But I graduated officially with an Engineering & Management degree and it's been a beautiful progression of stepping stones that I wouldn't change for the world to get exactly where I am right now.  Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Math Teacher, Mom, Children's Book Writer, Entrepreneurship Adjunct at RIT, Landlord...That is a whole lot of life crammed into just one! HAHA! Thank you all for being part of my journey. Without your continued support, there wouldn't be a Finger Lakes Connected. I like to think of the world and especially our great community as being a very connected entity - we all help one another learn and grow. Happy Columbus Day, too! An adventurer with an entrepreneurial spirit when it certainly wasn't commonplace to have one. He followed his instincts with probably some leaps of faith along the way, too. In 1492 he sailed the ocean blue...and we celebrate with a day off of school and some from work :)

FLCC to screen 'Officer Involved' film Oct. 12
  
A documentary that explores the impact on police officers who are involved in shootings will be screened at Finger Lakes Community College at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The screening of "Officer Involved" is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Student Center Auditorium at the main campus, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua. The filmmaker, Patrick Shaver, will moderate a talk about the film after it is shown. 

Shaver was working as an officer in a large police department in Georgia about four years ago, when a colleague was involved in a shooting. Another friend, who did not have a law enforcement background, wondered why officers resort to violence rather than non-lethal means, such as shooting out a tire.

Having found no films that answered the question or explored the mental health effects on officers involved in shootings, Shaver set out to make one.

Tickets Available for Guild Luncheon
Tickets are available for the Thompson Health Guild's annual Fall Luncheon, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Ferris Hills at West Lake in Canandaigua. The guest speaker for this year's luncheon is Hope Moffett, author of "Traumatic Brain Injury: The Long Road Back," sharing her story of overcoming life's unexpected challenges.
 
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., with a cash bar open. Entrée choices are a Monte Cristo sandwich with Waldorf salad , a chicken Caesar wrap with Waldorf salad or a pineapple boat with tuna or chicken salad. All entrées include pumpkin bisque and apple crisp à la mode. The cost for a ticket to the luncheon is $20 per person. RSVP no later than Oct. 12 by calling Gail O'Brien at (585) 396-2756, and include your entrée choice.
 
Guests at the Fall Luncheon are asked to consider bringing a small, new, unwrapped toy or household item. These items will be included in the Guild's "Better Than Black Friday Sale," which allows Thompson employees to purchase affordable holiday gifts for their families.
  
Lymphedema Support Group Meeting Coming Up
The Lymphedema Support Group hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Constellation Center for Health and Healing at Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish St. This group is facilitated by Angela Kiklowicz, a Thompson Health occupational therapist and licensed massage therapist who is certified in Complete Decongestive Therapy for the treatment of lymphedema. This month's focus is peer support, featuring "Frequently Asked Questions in Lymphedema." RSVPs are not required. For more information, call (585) 396-6050.
