Susan Farrington has illustrated for some of the very best magazines, books and products.  Here, she shares some of her tips on working in her very unique collage style that incorporates found and created objects.  Enjoy reading!

Q. How did you get really, really good at your art?  What secrets or insights can you share to help others?
A. Art is like everything else in life; you have to keep practicing to get good at it. I had lots of encouragement as a child to be creative and that definitely helped. But as an adult I remember times when I felt discouraged and had to remind myself that I could make anything. It also helps to be grateful for being able to do something you love.  Not many people have that luxury.

Q. How do you stay inspired?
 A. I love to hunt for objects that may make their way into my art such as vintage ephemera, fabric, wheels, keys, thread.  Give me a white elephant table at a fair or a full-to-the-rafters estate sale and I'm a happy person.

Q. What was your favorite job so far?

A. The new Valentine's day cover I just did for Cricket magazine.  I also LOVE the peace notebook images I recently did for Target. (Above)

Q. What advice do you have for staying creative?
A. Keep encouraging yourself. Feed your creative spirit by looking at art at museums, in illustration annuals, on Etsy.  Think of your work as play and have fun. Keep at it.

Q. What "fills your well" and inspires you?
A. I love keeping a journal which I fill with sketches, postcards, ephemera, flotsam.  When I am ready to start working I will often go to my journals which provide the inspiration for whatever will come next in my work.
Sometimes an object or material will suggest a piece or series.  For example, I found an old book of do-it-yourself projects for children at a yard sale recently--yellowed paper, great texture--I used the images in a new series of collages.
