Did you hear they discovered the "Alleged Father of Bitcoin"

I was on that story two weeks ago when it all went down.

Ended up with a
60-minutes style
Interview...walking backwards, tossing questions and filming at the same time

...former students will recognize the voice.

The best part of this craft is how much you can still learn both on the job, and from others. That's why I love being a part of

Hope to see you in one of our West Coast or NYC courses.

How to Condense an Interview or Talking head

Everone needs to condense an interview sound bite...or just cut out UH's and UMM's.

If it's cutting down the boss's video intro, head of marketing's training video, a CEO addressing the troops, a news interview, documentary sound bite...or even a customer testimonial...

These techniques of masking the cut will make your editing life easier.

The cutting tips are designed for every editing program.
I just like working in Final Cut Pro X, that's why the timeline snaps shots are from that software.

Step one:
Remove the unwanted material.
  • In some Systems you will BLADE CUT on both sides of the unwanted material then CLOSE THE GAP
  • FCPX  use the Range Tool to select the material to be deleted. then hit delete..and the time line will automatically close the gap.

After the unwanted material is removed, a cut appears where the two parts meet...this will look like a bad edit if not fixed.

We will correct this bad edit by placing a
BAND AID
above the CUT.

In this case that BAND AID consists of Two B-Roll Shots.

STEP TWO
  • In most software: Edit the 2 B-Roll shots above the cut and B-Roll Audio in the Sound tracks below.
  • In FCPX use the "Q" keyboard short-cut to edit the B-Roll above the CUT..include Audio.
  • These are now "Connected Clips"

Before
After

When played, the viewer will only see the B-Roll imagery on the top track ..not the jump cut underneath.

Be sure to place the destination of your B-Roll Shots before the CUT...never on the CUT itself. Like a Magician distracting the viewer moments before the trick!

Remember, B-Roll Clips should always have audio ..at a soft level...unless the Interview shot already has that "sound" in the background.

Summary
  1. Remove Unwanted material
  2. Find 2 B-roll shots
  3. Edit in ABOVE Interview Video Track
  4. Place B-Roll Before the Cut
  5. Lower B-Roll Natural Sound
TECHNIQUE #2 for Condensing Interview Material
Enlarge Image in the second part of the Sound bite

One of my favorite ways to condense Sound bites is to JUMP CUT to the second part of the Interview which I have 'BLOWN-UP" in Size.

STEP ONE
In your editing system find the tools to Enlarge your video image.
  • In FCP7 it's called Image + Wireframe
  • FCPX it's the TRANSFORM TOOL

STEP TWO
SELECT THE SECOND PART OF THE INTERVIEW.
and INCREASE THE SCALE OF THE IMAGE.

STEP THREE
REPOSITION IT TO PROPER INTERVIEW FRAMING.

STEP FOUR
You are done...Do not add a dissolve

PLAY IT BACK...IT LOOKS SO COOL !

SUMMARY
  1. Remove Unwanted Material (same as in technique #1)
  2. ENLARGE 2nd INTERVIEW CLIP
  3. REPOSITION 2nd INTERVIEW CLIP

This Digital Bolex may be just a FAD...but how fun does it look !

A Helios Lens is the secret of many music video shooters, and feature folks.  It's great if you want something other then the crisp clean look of a "Kit" lens that comes with most DSLR Cameras.
