What Is Your Technique for Acetabular Component Positioning in THA?

Find out what the experts recommend in this module from ICJR CME Online

To minimize the risk of dislocation after total hip arthroplasty, orthopaedic surgeons have relied on the cup inclination and anteversion targets defined by Lewinnek et al in 1978 as a "safe zone" for acetabular component positioning.

Research published over the last few years, however, has demonstrated that the Lewinnek safe zone is not as accurate as it was once thought to be, particularly in light of advances in hip implant technology since the 1970s.

Earlier this year, for example, a study from Mayo Clinic showed that patients will dislocate even when the cup is in the so-called safe zone - more than 50% of their dislocators had a cup placed within the parameters of the safe zone.

What does mean for orthopaedic surgeons today? How can they improve cup positioning to help reduce dislocations following THA?

Three physicians with experience in primary and revision THA - Dr. Adam Freedhand, Dr. Ormonde Mahoney, and Dr. Michael Ries- offer their insights in ICJR's online CME course, How to Achieve Acetabular Alignment.

In this module - 1 of 29 CME activities currently available in ICJR CME Online - they address:
  • Intraoperative landmarks for achieving acceptable acetabular alignment
  • The criteria for a well-positioned versus a poorly positioned acetabular component
  • The use of robotics as a tool in optimizing acetabular cup position
After review of this course, the participant will understand the nuances of a well-positioned versus a poorly positioned acetabular component, as well as the use of advanced technology to improve cup positioning.

The Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) has designated this module for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Creditâ„¢ .
