Greetings!
Ronald Reagan was concluding his presidency when I was a senior in high school - 1989. I was the same age that my son Andrew is now as he comes into the home stretch with high school, graduating in June. Earlier today I was watching Reagan's final speech in office,
The Farewell Address
, because I am a student of public speaking. I was reminiscing about that time period, a time of what many consider one of great success as Reagan finished his term in office.
His final speech, and in fact almost all of his speeches, were delivered in a memorable, effective, and often humorous manner.
He is one to emulate, even today.
As I work with my clients, I will keep Reagan's speeches in my heart and mind in the following ways:
- Paint a visual picture in your speech - tell a story that will captivate the audience. Be real, and be authentic
- Demonstrate class and consideration for others in your speeches
- Look your best, dress for success, but don't let your appearance overwhelm the message
- Offer clear messages
- Give consideration to the perspectives of others and offer these perspectives as examples, whether you agree or disagree
- Be classy, be kind, and be sure to practice!
Many of my clients are led to give speeches to help spread the word about a campaign we are working on. Take note of Reagan, his presentation and ability to bring ease to any situation.
Yours in clarity,
