Hudud: Mandatory or Maximum?
Imam Feisal is writing a special op-ed series for The Malaysian Star that addresses the subject of hudud - the punishments associated with the Islamic penal code.
In this second installment, Imam Feisal argues that "in all instances where the Quran specifies a punishment, the Quran also calls for repentance, mercy and reformation." Therefore, to promote justice, we must interpret hudud as maximum - not mandatory - punishments.
