HELP WANTED

With the season just around the corner, the Varsity Hyacks are looking for help in a number of areas off the field. The most pressing need is for additional game night staff and poster distribution. If you are interested please contact Barb Drake at: bdrake1@shaw.ca or coach Lalji to get more details. But there are a number of smaller roles also available. Our program has always received outstanding parent and community support, so we expect 2016 will be no different. We look forward to hearing from you.

HYACKS WIN FIRST GAME ON NEW FIELD

The Varsity Hyacks celebrated their return to Mercer Stadium on Friday with a 28-19 win over Notre Dame of Calgary. Gr 10 RB Broxx Comia rushed for 225 yards and 2 TDs on 15 carries, more than half the Hyacks 400 yards of offense on the night. The Pride was ranked 7th nationally by Canada Football Chat coming into the game and the Hyacks were only the 2nd Canadian team to beat them in the past 4 years.

With the Hyacks trailing 19-8 early in the 3rd quarter, Ben Tjernagel returned a kickoff 83 yards for a TD, his 2nd return TD in as many weeks. That sparked the Hyacks, who would score 20 straight points to close out the come from behind victory. Trew Dancey scored the Hyacks other major. Defensively, Shane Belsher stood out with 8 tackles, while Connor Pattison added 7, including one for loss. Comia was named the Player of the Game, while Prento Durigon was named Lineman of the Game.

This week the Hyacks will travel to face GW Graham of Chilliwack. The Grizzlies are among the top teams in AA and boast a large number of returning players including a strong offensive line. They played the Hyacks very close on Homecoming last season, with New West winning 21-10. Game time is 7:30 pm at Exhibition Field.

JVs CONTINUE THEIR SUCCESS IN WEEK ONE

The JVs meanwhile christened Mercer Stadium on Thursday night with an impressive 30-14 win over a strong Mission squad. Michael Zhang opened the scoring with a pair of first half TDs, giving the Hyacks a 16-0 lead at the break. In the 2nd half QBs Evan Pattson and Payton Myers each scored a TD.

A number of linemen turned in strong performances, including Evan Nolli, Pavan Kainth and Vishaan Narayan. Linebacker Dominic Racher also stood out, as did receiver Arjun Bal. The JVs will also be at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack this Friday, with a 4pm game vs GW Graham. The team bus will be leaving at 1pm.

YOUTH FOOTBALL - HYACK FAMILY DAY A SUCCESS

The Royal City Hyacks Youth Football Club had a very successful first weekend at Mercer Stadium, with a number of exciting games throughout the day, as all six teams were in action:

JR BANTAM:
The JB's played to a hard-fought 12-12 tie against the Vancouver Trojans. Jordan Freeland found Andros Dancey for a pair of TD passes. Gus Oliver stood out along the line on both sides of the ball, while Jacob MacCumber returned an interception 20 yards.

PEE WEE:
The pee wees scored on the final play of the game, to knock off the GSL Panthers 12-6. Jaxson Domville scored both TDs for the Hyacks, while other offensive standouts for the Hyacks included Gavin Garret , who broke a 40 yard run in the 2nd quarter and Callum Rogers who had a couple of 20+ yard runs. Iija Scow had a big 4th quarter fumble recovery that set the Hyacks up for the winning score!

ATOM:
The Atoms took part in another thrilling game, this time falling 24-18 to Coquitlam on the game's final play. Benicio Hageleit and Lukas Lalji each scored TDs for the 2nd straight game, but the most exciting play of the game came with just over a minute left when Nathan Hillman registered one of his many QB sacks, this time forcing a fumble that was returned 50 yards for a TD by Benjamin Porter to tie the game at 18. EJ Hansraj stood out among the linemen, in his first game of the season.

FLAG ORANGE:
Orange Tykes came from behind to defeat Westside White, 18-14. Forrest Johnston and Gavin Domaas demonstrated solid efforts defensively. Jacob Armstrong added majors in the first and second half.  Christhony Dela Cruz rushed 40 yards on the final game winning TD.

FLAG BLACK:
It was a tough season opener for the Tyke Black team who fell 20-12 to the Coquitlam Packers. George Paterakis had a big day with a pair of touchdowns, along with some huge offensive runs by Alexander Biniaris and Dylan Jones. Sean Inglis and Jai-shon Llewellyn also provided key support on defense.
