With the season just around the corner, the Varsity Hyacks are looking for help in a number of areas off the field. The most pressing need is for additional game night staff and poster distribution. If you are interested please contact Barb Drake at: email@example.com or coach Lalji to get more details. But there are a number of smaller roles also available. Our program has always received outstanding parent and community support, so we expect 2016 will be no different. We look forward to hearing from you.

HYACKS TO REOPEN MERCER STADIUM THIS FRIDAY
The new turf field will be ready, as will the Hyacks, for the return of high school football action to Mercer Stadium this Friday night. The Hyacks will also debut their brand new uniforms, as they take on Notre Dame High School from Calgary, only the 2nd time New West has ever played another Canadian team from outside of BC.
Last Friday night, the Hyacks fell 40-24 at Scappoose, Oregon. The Indians are a perennial power in the 4A classification in Oregon and reached the State Championship game last season. Six turnovers also didn't help the Hyacks cause. There were some bright spots however, including Trew Dancey who paced the way for the Hyacks with 124 yards rushing and 1 TD. Receivers Ben Tjernagel and Shane Belsher combined for 13 receptions for 136 yards, with Tjernagel also adding 7 tackles and a 53 yard interception return for a TD. Connor Pattison led the defense with 8 tackles while Prento Durigon also made several outstanding plays.
Following the game, the Hyacks were in Seattle for the U of Washington vs Rutgers college football game.
The Hyacks opponent this Friday night will be No
tre Dame HS of Calgary. The Pride is one of the top teams annually in Alberta, having lost in the provincial title game last season and were ranked 8th nationally by Canada Football Chat (New West was 33rd). Notre Dame is currently ranked #3 in Alberta while New West is ranked #3 in BC. The game will also be broadcast live on Sportscanada.tv
JVs TO BEGIN TITLE
The title of "first team to play on the new turf" will actually belong to the Hyack JVs, as they will play host to Mission HS on Thursday at 5:30. The last time the Hyack JVs were in action, they were winning the first ever provincial title in the history of the NWSS Football program, back in December. Now a new group of JV Hyacks will begin their journey.
Grade 10s such as Kinsale Philip and Broxx Comia will be getting plenty of action with the varsity, so on Thursdays, names like Evan Nolli, Shaye Rathjen and Michael Zhang will carry the load. Those three were named team captains. Others who have stood out in fall camp include Dominic Racher, Evan Pattison and Gr 8 lineman, Vishaan Narayan.
YOUTH FOOTBALL - HYACK FAMILY DAY THIS SUNDAY
All six of the Royal City Hyacks Youth Foootball teams will be in action this Sunday at Mercer Stadium. All teams opened their season on Labor Day weekend:
The JB's fell 19-0 at Cloverdale, in a game that was 7-0 at half time and saw the Hyacks with plenty of chances. The game's highlight came when Jordan Freeland and Andros Dancey connected for a 40 yard pass and run. Dancey added 8 tackles on defense, while Jacob MacCumber also hauled in a 20 yard reception.
At the GSL Kickoff Jamboree on Monday the Hyack Pee Wee's fared well, with a pair of 7-7 ties. Jaxson Domville scored both TDs for the Hyacks, while Gregory Palmer was all over the field defensively from his linebacker position. Iija Scow had a long run in the second game and
also turned in some solid runs and played well at corner.
The Atoms opened their season with a thrilling 20-20 tie at North Delta. Benicio
scored 2 TDs. Lukas Lalji opened the 2nd half with a kickoff return for a TD and also added a PAT. Nathan Hillman was a beast on defense with 15+ tackles, many in the backfield. He also added a PAT on offense. The offensive line, led by Lachlan Mackay, turned in a strong effort against a much larger Longhorns defensive front.
After taking home the Bronze Boot last weekend, the Orange team started their regular season with 20-14 win at North Delta. Keegan Wilson opened the scoring, with Christhony De La Cruz and Jacob Armstrong adding majors later on. James Contini had a dominant game on defense.
