Segment I Work Activities
Recently Completed
  • Placed concrete for the bridge pier protection system at the eastbound Denbigh Boulevard Bridge.
  • Completed installation of the structural bridge girders and substructure concrete at the Industrial Park Drive Bridges.
  • Completed construction of retaining wall at Abutment B of the eastbound and westbound I-64 bridges over Industrial Park Drive.

Current Status:
  • Noise wall work including setting posts and panels for sound walls west of Denbigh Boulevard and footings west of Industrial Park Drive.
  • Continue clearing between Fort Eustis Boulevard to the Lee Hall Reservoir, as well as grading to Industrial Park Drive for ramp extensions.
  • Continue joint repairs and approach slab replacements at the existing Lee Hall Reservoir and Fort Eustis Bridges.
  • Started concrete pavement repairs along east- and westbound I-64.
  • Started installing stay-in-place deck forms for the east- and westbound Industrial Park Drive Bridges.

Upcoming Work Activities
  • Start base paving operations between Fort Eustis Boulevard and Industrial Park Drive for ramp extensions.
  • Start placing Thin Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete Overlay (THMACO) pavement along east- and westbound I-64.
  • Continue footings, posts and panels for noise walls west of Denbigh Boulevard.
  • Continue grading for noise walls west of Industrial Park Drive.
  • Continue joint repairs and approach slab replacements at the existing Lee Hall Reservoir and Fort Eustis Bridges.
  • Start placing bridge deck concrete for the east- and westbound Industrial Park Drive Bridges.

Segment II Work Activities

Recently Completed
  • Completed clearing and grubbing operations between Penniman Road to the west project limits.
  • Completed driving sheet piles at Abutment A of the westbound Burma Road Bridge. Drove test piles for Burma and Exit 243B Ramp Bridge.
  • Drove production piles for Pier 1, 2 & Abutment A for Jefferson Avenue Bridge.
  • Drove production piles for Pier 1, 2, 3 & Abutment B for Yorktown Road Bridge.
  • Poured footers and columns for Pier 2, 3, & Abutment B for Yorktown Road Bridge
  • Completed test bores for overhead sign structures.
  • Completed retaining wall at Burma Road Bridge.

Current Status:
  • Continue demolition activities Yorktown Road, Jefferson Avenue, Penniman Road, Exit 243B Ramp, and Burma Road Bridges.
  • Continue driving production piles at Jefferson Avenue and Yorktown Road Bridges.
  • Pouring substructure concrete and started test pile driving on Abutment A side of Yorktown Road Bridge.
  • Drainage culvert work throughout the project.
  • Continue maintenance work throughout corridor, including striping, tree trimming and pothole repairs.
  • Cut and fill operations in the median from Jefferson Avenue to Burma Road, as well as from Route 60 overpass to Penniman Road Bridge.

Upcoming Work Activities:
  • Continue maintenance work throughout the corridor.

  • Bridge demolition and construction activities on the Yorktown Road, Jefferson Avenue, Burma Road, Penniman Road, and Exit 243B Ramp Bridges. 
  • Work on existing and new drainage culverts.
  • Start placement and grading of Phase 1 subbase material.
  • Mobilize crane to Penniman in preparation to begin driving test piles.
  • Installation of formwork for upcoming pour of caps for Piers 2 and 3 at Yorktown Road Bridges.
Travel Information
Lane Closures:
Each week's scheduled lane closures can be found on the project website on the Traffic Alerts page. 

There are new traffic patterns with one lane of traffic remaining open in each direction at the I-64 overpasses at Jefferson Avenue and Yorktown Road.

Weeknight east- and westbound single-lane closures take place on Sundays through Thursdays, beginning as early as 7 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m. the following morning between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway) (exit 242).

All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.

**VDOT will suspend most highway work zones and lift lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for Labor Day travel from noon Friday, September 1 until noon Tuesday, September 5.**

Alternate Routes:
Avoid the backups and find alternate routes around the work zone by viewing the  Alternate Routes Map now available on the I-64 Widening web site.
REDUCED SPEED AHEAD
   Please obey the reduced 55mph speed limit which is in effect 24/7 in both the east- and westbound work zones of the project between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Colonial Parkway.
